Benefit Mexican breakfast at Sequim Prairie Grange

Mujeres de Maiz (Women of Corn) Opportunity Foundation presents a Mexican breakfast from 8:30 a.m.-noon Sunday, March 6, at the Sequim Prairie Grange hall, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim. For a suggested $10 donation, diners will enjoy cheese scrambled eggs with salsa and black beans on a corn tortilla, tea or coffee.

Proceeds support scholarships and other educational programs for indigenous women and girls in Chiapas, Mexico. Mujeres de Maiz is a 10-year-old nonprofit based in Sequim.

Dean to discuss Climate Change Adaption Plan

Kate Dean, director of the North Olympic Peninsula Resource Conservation & Development Council, will present a program focused on “The Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Jefferson and Clallam Counties” at the Thursday, March 3, Studium Generale event in Peninsula College’s Little Theater, beginning at 12:30 p.m. Dean will discuss the plan and the collaborative efforts to pursue solutions and continued strategies toward preparedness.

The event is free and open to the public.


United Way members to meet

The United Way of Clallam County invites all members to attend the annual meeting at noon, Tuesday, March 8, in the UWCC offices, 1601 E. Front St, Bldg. 2-A.

Members are those individuals or businesses who have contributed to or volunteered for the United of Clallam County during the past year.

Community members with an interest in United Way are welcome to attend this meeting as well. Officers to be elected are president, vice president and treasurer.


Fundraiser at schoolhouse to ‘Save the Olympic Peninsula’

The group Save the Olympic Peninsula will have a fundraising event from 6-8 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the Dungeness Schoolhouse, 2781 Towne Road, Sequim.

The Therapy Session Band will play and there will be food, beverages and a silent auction.


Learn about disaster preparedness from Red Cross

On Wednesday, March 9, from 7-8 p.m., Red Cross volunteers Leah Kruc and Jessica Strandlund will present plans for disaster preparedness for personal, home, community and pleasure boats to include tools, strategies and plan preparedness along with timelines in case of earthquakes and/or tsunami (specifically the Cascade subduction zone event now forecasted). The event is at John Wayne Marina, 2577 West Bay Road, Sequim. The public is invited and questions are welcome.

County meeting cancelled

The Clallam County Planning Commission meeting set for March 2 has been cancelled. The commission reconvenes on March 16. Call 417-2277 for more information.


Community lunch at St. Luke’s

How does a piping hot bowl of homemade soup served with a crispy green salad sound? Every Wednesday at noon, St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave. in Sequim, serves up a free lunch. All are welcome.


Sequim Boy Scout Troop offers lawn aeration service

As a fundraiser for the troop, Boy Scout Troop 1498 is offering lawn aeration services Saturday-Sunday, March 19-20, and Saturday, March 26; cost is $59 for up to one-quarter acre.

Owners need not be home for the service but need to have lawns mowed, underground sprinkler heads marked and dog waste picked up. Make checks payable to Boy Scout Troop 1498.

Garden Club meets

The Sequim Prairie Garden Club meets at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 7, at the clubhouse in Pioneer Memorial Park, 387 E. Washington St. Popular speakers Kelly Dodson and Sue Milliken of Port Townsend’s Far Reaches Farm in Port Townsend, return to continue the chronicle of their recent seed collecting expedition to China. The public is welcome to attend this free presentation.

A brown bag lunch follows the presentation with coffee and desserts provided by club member hostesses.

Seminar for seniors

There will be a free life care planning seminar from 10 a.m.-noon Thursday, March 3, at the Parkwood Clubhouse, 41 Green Meadow Drive, Sequim.

The seminar is put on by Legal Peace of Mind and will include options for seniors in health care, housing, finances and legal matters.

Kelp workshop in Port Townsend set for March 9

A kelp pressing workshop from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Wednesday, March 9, in Port Townsend will give you a glimpse into an amazing underwater world and send you home with your own artwork inspired by the beauty of the sea.

The program is co-sponsored by WSU Extension and Jefferson Community School and taught by Nam Siu, a marine biologist and professional diver. Register with WSU Extension (wsujeffersoncounty@gmail.com or call 360-379-5610 ext. 200.)

There is no fee, but a suggested donation of $5 at the door will support future marine education programs.

 

Thrift shop open Saturday

The Sequim Dungeness Hospital Guild’s thrift shop, 204 W. Bell St. in Sequim, will be open from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, March 5. New pieces of the vintage “Hall” pottery collection will be featured again along with furniture, clothing, fine jewelry and purses, shoes, tools and much more. The sale of the “Hall” collection is nearing an end, so come by and purchase a piece of American history.

Consignors and new volunteers always are needed.

Gain financial literacy

Anna Coburn, a compliance specialist and community reinvestment officer with First Federal, will share her wealth of knowledge gained from 25 years of banking experience in a free, two-part financial literacy series in the Raymond Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Coburn’s first presentation, Understanding Credit, is at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 8. She will next discuss Money Management at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 22.
