All-day meeting set for sanctuary council

NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary will host a meeting of the Sanctuary Advisory Council from 9:50 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, at the Elwha Klallam Heritage Center, 401 E. First St. in Port Angeles.

During the morning session, Carmen Watson Charles from the Elwha Klallam Tribe will give a presentation on Elwha Klallam heritage.

NOAA representatives will discuss the importance of ocean acidification and efforts to establish Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary as a sentinel site for ocean acidification. The meeting is open to the public, with public comment periods at 12:15 p.m. and 2:40 p.m.

Orca expert featured

Lynne Barre, Seattle branch chief for the Protected Resources Division of NOAA Fisheries, will be in Port Angeles at 6:30 p.m. Friday, March 25, to talk about Southern Resident killer whales or orcas in the Pacific Northwest.

This free community speaker series is sponsored by NOAA Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary and Feiro Marine Life Center, and will be held at The Landing Mall conference room beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Easter egg hunt at farm

Freedom Farm, 493 Spring Road, Port Angeles, will host a horseback Easter Egg hunt from noon-2 p.m. Sunday, March 27. Children under 100 pounds will have the opportunity to hunt Easter Eggs while being led around on horseback.

This will be a fundraising event to help the Freedom Farm Horsemanship Team earn money to compete in Rated Horse Shows off the peninsula. Suggested donation is $10 per rider or $20 for a family. Call Mary Gallagher at 460-6410 if you have questions.


Get pioneer dinner tickets

Tickets for the Sequim Pioneer Dinner on May 13 go on sale April 1. To attend this event, you must be an adult descendant of one of the pioneer families that arrived in the Sequim Valley prior to 1962. The $17 tickets may be purchased by contacting Hazel Ault at BrokersGroup Realty, 681-8778.

Tickets need to be purchased in advance, none will be available at the door.


Seeking art group members

The City of Sequim is seeking applicants to serve the remainder of a four-year term, expiring December 2017, on the City’s Arts Commission. This voluntary commission advises the city on matters related to art and culture. Applicants must reside in the Clallam County boundaries of the Sequim school district.

Saving seed subject of talk

Micaela Colley from the Organic Seed Alliance in Port Townsend shows how to save seed from one’s own garden at 4:30 p.m. Monday, March 28, at Nash’s Farm Store, 4681 Sequim-Dungeness Way in Dungeness. The talk is free and open to the public.

Colley will present basic seed saving skills, including basic seed biology, selecting crops for seed saving, preventing unwanted cross pollination and seed harvesting practices. Bring your spring planting list and seed saving questions.


Trinity dinner set

A free community dinner will be served at 5 p.m. Thursday, March 31, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave. The meal includes ham, baked beans, vegetables, fruit salad, dessert and beverages.

Reservations, which are strongly encouraged to ensure that enough food is prepared, may be made by phoning the church at 683-5367 between 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday before the dinner or by e-mail to dinners@sequimtumc.org.

The church presents the dinners the last Thursday of each month.


Single seniors gather

Sequim Senior Singles will meet at noon, Saturday, April 2, in the buffet room at 7 Cedars Casino, 270756 U.S. Highway 101, Blyn. Sequim Senior Singles is a social club formed by singles over 50 to provide a way to meet friends and participate in many activities.

Tree-planting party on tap

The North Olympic Salmon Coalition seeks volunteers to plant trees at Snow Creek Estuary from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, April 2. Volunteers who participate in this event support efforts of seventh-grade students from Blue Heron Middle School in Port Townsend, who have been at work engineering a solution to a question that experts face on the North Olympic Peninsula: “What can be done to improve salmon habitat?”

Tools, gloves and training are provided. Bring long pants, water and a lunch. Consider wearing boots, as the site can get muddy. The Salmon Coalition provides light refreshments and a port-a-potty is on site.

School board directors  cancel April 4 meeting

During the March 21 school board meeting, Sequim School District’s board directors voted to cancel their regularly scheduled April 4 board meeting, as it falls during the week of spring break.

The only board meeting scheduled for April is  at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 18 at 6:30 p.m.

Board meetings take place in the boardroom, located in the Sequim High School auditorium building at 533 N. Sequim Ave., and are open to the public. Board meeting agendas and minutes are posted on the district’s website at www.sequim.k12.wa.us under “Board of Directors.”

Spring break week is April 4-8, and all schools will be closed during that time. The district office will be open from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. during that week.

Tablets available at libraries

This spring, uncover new resources at the North Olympic Library System. Full-sized iPad tablets are now available for in-library use at NOLS branches in Port Angeles, Sequim, Forks and Clallam Bay. Library card holders in good-standing may borrow an iPad on a first-come, first-served basis for up to two hours at a time.


Relay For Life kicks off

Relay For Life of Sequim kickoff will be from 6-8 p.m. Monday, April 4, at  the Sequim Elks Lodge, 143 Port Williams Road, Sequim. Learn about how to start a team, fundraise and details about this year’s event.

There will be a slide show with the results from last year and goals for this year, a relay video, information on the theme and mission, games and prizes. The lodge will provide burgers and fish & chips for purchase. Register your team at www.relayforlife.org/sequimwa.

Senior Nutrition menu set

Sequim Senior Nutrition Site menus are served at 4:30 p.m. at the Shipley Center, 921 E. Hammond St. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Suggested donation is $5 (60 and over), $8 guest and a 24-hour advance reservation is needed. RSVP to 683-8491. Menus are subject to change.
