Apply for Beta Nu grants
Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma is again offering grants to college students who are majoring in education. Applicants must have graduated from one of the Clallam County high schools and be a student at either the junior or senior level in an accredited teacher-training institution of higher learning or are working on their initial teacher certification post-college. Students who have completed the first two years of work at Peninsula College and have been accepted by an accredited teacher-training program are also eligible.

Free park days in June
The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission will offer two “free days” next month: Saturday, June 4, recognition of National Trails Day, and Saturday, June 11, National Get Outdoors Day. Visitors will not need to display a Discover Pass for day-use visits to state parks on these dates.
The free days apply only at state parks; the Discover Pass still is required on WDFW and DNR lands. The remaining free days are Aug. 25, Sept. 24 and Nov. 11.

A wash and a benefit
Windermere Real Estate brokers from its Sequim-East and Sunland offices are demonstrating their attention to “Detail” for the Windermere Community Service Day from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Friday, June 3, at Red Carpet Car Wash, 231 Valley Center Place in Sequim. Proceeds will raise funds for a new air hockey table for the Sequim Boys & Girls Club.
County Fair theme winner announced
Clallam County Fair officials announce that Dave Logan of Port Angeles is the 2016 Clallam County Fair theme winner. The winning Fair theme is “Cowboy Boots and Country Roots.” He wins $100, two fair day passes and two fair T-shirts. Fair dates are Aug. 18-21.

Former Sequim school leader running for office
Garn Christensen, Sequim schools superintendent from 2003-2007, is running for state representative in Washington’s state’s 12th Legislative District, a district encompassing predominantly rural areas in north central Washington that includes all Chelan and Douglas and parts of Okanogan and Grant counties.
Christensen is one of four candidates — all preferring “Republican Party” on their campaign tickets — in the 12th district, including Jerry Paine, Mike Steele and Danny Stone. Incumbent representative Bard Hawking is running for the district’s state senator position.
Vet clinic planned
The Olympic Peninsula Equine Network will be hosting an equine vet clinic at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 11, at 554 Roupe Road, Sequim. OPEN and Dr. Sean Tuley are working together again offering horse owners reasonable prices on various veterinary procedures at this one-day vet clinic. Procedures offered include teeth floats and castrations. All other routine vet services also are available;
X-rays, vaccinations, worming, medications, etc. There is a 10-float limit and appointments are required.

DEAFOP picnic set
Deaf Events and Friends Olympic Peninsula aka DEAFOP members will meet at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, June 18, for a picnic at the home of Linda Contorno, 401 W. Johnson Drive, Sequim, approximately 3.5 miles from the Sequim Avenue exit. Chicken and vegetable kabobs are provided; bring a potluck dish to share.
Directions are as follows: From U.S. Highway 101, take the Sequim Avenue exit and turn left; continue north through the roundabout at Sequim-Dungeness Way; watch for Evans Road on the left, take the next right onto Woodcock Road. Turn left onto Serpentine Avenue and then turn left on West Johnson Drive; the house is at the end on the right.

Call for entries for ‘All Things Purple’
The City Arts Advisory Commission is seeking entries of purple art, in any medium, for the next exhibit to be displayed in the lobby of the Civic Center at 152 W. Cedar St. The art pieces must be no larger than 36 inches by 36 inches and not exceed 50 pounds per piece. Deadline for submissions is June 10. The exhibit will be on display from July 1-Sept. 30. All entries will be juried by the CAAC. An artist reception will take place on July 1.
