Cranks for the holidays

Sequim’s second ‘Cranksgiving’ to aid food bank

For the holidays, locals are filling their bicycle seats to fill some empty stomachs.

The second Sequim Cranksgiving is a food drive on wheels — two, to be exact — as cyclists hit the streets to collect food for the Sequim Food Bank on Saturday, Nov. 17, rain or shine or other.

Beginning at 9:30 a.m. at the food bank, 144 W. Alder St., Cranksgiving sees cyclists purchasing food items throughout town that the Sequim Food Bank needs. Participants receive a shopping list, provided by Stephen Rosales at the Sequim Food Bank, and a list of stores.

During the event participants purchase food items from the shopping list at specified stores around town and when done bring the food to the start point. Each rider must purchase a minimum of six food items from the shopping list. They must visit at least five stores and purchase at least one item at each store.

Riders are encouraged to purchase more than the minimum amount of items.

The ride is open to anyone with a bicycle and bike helmet who wants to participate. It is a timed event, though riders are encouraged to ride safely and must wear a helmet during the event.

When done, cyclists return to the food bank and all food is donated to the Sequim Food Bank. Prizes are awarded for several categories.

Cranksgiving is sponsored by the Spoke Folks Cycling Club of Sequim. Tom Coonelly, one of the event’s organizers, said the group’s goal is to top the 300 pounds of food raised at last year’s inaugural event.
