Clallam County deputy Paul Federline helped rescue a woman involved in a rollover crash at the Masters Road intersection near the Port Angeles Walmart on March 29.
Federline, while giving a citizen a courtesy ride from Port Angeles to Sequim, was flagged down by passers-by at the scene of the crash at about 5:20 p.m. on Sunday. An SUV resting on its side was occupied by its driver, 63-year-old Lila M. Betts of Port Angeles. The woman was suffering from an arm injury and was conscious but unable to get out of the vehicle.
With the SUV’s motor running and gasoline spilling out of the gas tank, Federline instructed the driver to cover her face and used his baton to break the windshield enough to reach in and shut off the motor. This action likely prevented the SUV from catching fire or worse, law enforcement officials said.
Fire department and EMS personnel arrived soon after and took over the rescue, peeling back the roof to extract the driver.
The SUV driver was transported to the Olympic Medical Center. The extent of her injuries was not known at press time.
Edward J. Hogan, the driver of the other vehicle, a pickup truck, received minor injuries.
According to the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office, the SUV was struck at the driver-side area by the pickup traveling in the eastbound lane, causing it to roll over and come to rest on its passenger side.
The accident is being investigated by the Washington State Patrol.
