Sequim’s Andy Nilles, 93, and Gladys Salley, 90, tied the knot this week in a small ceremony at the Cock-a-Doodle Doughnuts in Port Angeles.

The story was picked up by news outlets around the nation.

The wedding location was suggested by Salley’s granddaughter Jada Jack, who also arranged the day’s events. The Rev. Mark Weatherford of the Eastern Hills Community Church officiated.

Jack was busy decorating the couple’s car as the appointed time for the wedding came and went.

Through a friend, she sent a message to the crowd: “Every wedding is late. Get over it.”

Salley responded, “She doesn’t understand. At our age, minutes count.”

Salley said she was attracted by Nilles’ skills behind the wheel of his fancy car, a Chevy HHR. Before the ceremony, Nilles said that was only partially true. He suggested they were perhaps expecting, saying with a laugh that the two “had to get married.”

The two live at The Vintage in Sequim, where they met. Salley said she fell in love with Cock-a-Doodle’s apple fritters after first moving to Sequim five years ago.

She said she still requires Nilles to make the long round-trip for a bite of her favorite pastry.

Following the ceremony the two drove to Leavenworth for their honeymoon. They will continue to make their home in The Vintage.
