Ely Yao is expanding her business.
This week Yao, owner of the popular Ely’s Cafe for the past 17 years, opened Yao International Market in the space adjacent to the cafe. Yao’s new market sells spices, soups, sauces and drinks.
"The focus is on Asian," said Kitty Sokkappa, Sequim, who is managing the new venture. Sokkappa, who like Yao is Taiwanese, said, "We’re gonna start small and see how it goes."
The inventory may be limited, but the market already provides a great selection of items for those on the peninsula who want to expand their palates. There are Thai, Vietnamese and Chinese spices. Black fungus, another Chinese specialty, sits next to Vietnamese noodle soup and sweet and spicy Thai sauces.
"The basic idea is to make all of this convenient to
everyone on the peninsula," said Yao.
Yao International held its grand opening Friday, Oct. 1. The store is open from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesdays through Sundays.
"If business does well, we’ll open it seven days a week," said Sokkappa.
Drop by the store at 206 N. Sequim Ave. or call 683-5958.
