Two events in October celebrate Indian voices – a free writers workshop and a special Foothills Writers Series presentation. Both will be held in the Peninsula College Longhouse House of Learning, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

The writers workshop is designed for beginning through advanced Indian/Native American writers and will meet at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14. Workshop leaders are English faculty Kate Reavey and Alice Derry, both of whom are well-published authors. The two will lead participants in writing exercises and provide feedback on completed work.

On Tuesday, Oct. 20, Peninsula College’s Foothills Writers Series and the Peninsula College Longhouse host a reading featuring the "voices" of the different peninsula tribes.

Everyone is invited to the event that begins with a soup potluck at 5:30 p.m., followed by readings at 6 p.m. Those coming for the potluck may bring a crock pot of their favorite soup or something else to share. The Longhouse will provide buckskin bread, fresh fruit and coffee.

All Indian voices are invited to participate in the readings. Readers need not be published to read from their work. The only requirement is a passion for writing.

These events are co-sponsored by the college’s Foothills Writers Series and the English department. The reading is being presented as part of the regular Foothills Series and the WomenSpirit Coalition’s Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
