Rods were casting, fish were biting and smiles were shining at Kids Fishing Day on May 21.
Organizers estimate upwards of 500 children participated in the event at the Water Reclamation Site just north of Carrie Blake Park hosted by the North Olympic Peninsula Chapter of the Puget Sound Anglers.
Co-organizer Tom Duttrey said it was a great success.
“We just enjoying doing something for the kids,” he said. “Plus it gives the parents and grandparents a little bit of time to share with their kids and grandkids. And if you look around, there’s just as many girls fishing as boys.”
About 50 volunteers helped with the event in many capacities including cleaning fish after they were caught. Prior to the event, the pond was stocked with about 2,000 rainbow trout, Duttrey said.
