A small fire, named the Upper Falls Fire, is burning southwest of Barnes Point at Lake Crescent, Olympic National Park officials announced today, Aug. 8. 

The fire is burning in steep rugged terrain upslope of Marymere Falls and is estimated to be 1.5 acres in size, they said.

Crews from Olympic National Park and the Washington Department of Natural Resources are on scene and have begun fire suppression efforts. Impacts may include smoke in the Barnes Point area and along US Highway 101 near Lake Crescent.

The park received a report of the fire at about 5:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7. Two park rangers responded to investigate. At about 6 p.m., national park and Department of Natural Resources crews began fire suppression efforts. 

The Marymere Falls trails remains open, though the trail may be closed if fire conditions change. At this time, no structures are threatened, park officials said. 

The fire is believed to be human-caused and is under investigation, officials said.
