Organizers of Sequim’s biggest back-to-school event are looking for some helping hands.
Plans are now in progress for Sequim’s fourth-annual Back to School Fair, set for 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 27, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.
The Sequim School District, Boys & Girls Clubs of the Olympic Peninsula, Parenting Matters Foundation/First Teacher and other groups once again are collaborating to bring services and resources at no charge to Sequim families.
“This is a fun event that offers a host of resources and information for families and all under one roof,” Parenting Matters program director Nicole Brewer said. “This will be our fourth fair, and happily, we’ve seen it grow in offerings over the years.”
The free event features fun family activities, food and other giveaways, interactive exhibits — including a fire truck, school bus and police car — plus backpacks and school supplies for families in need. Information on the school district, early childhood resources, health resources and more will be available. Available services include haircuts, car seat checks, vision screening and more.
“We are currently seeking sponsors, as well as booth vendors, to offer activities and information,” Janet Gray, Boys & Girls Club resource development director, said. “Volunteers for the day of the event are needed as well to help set up and facilitate the activities. Sponsorship money goes primarily toward purchasing backpacks and school supplies.”
A planning committee made up of school district staff, representatives from local service organizations and community members is meeting regularly to coordinate the effort.
“It has truly been gratifying to work with so many dedicated volunteers on such a worthwhile event,” Patsene Dashiell, co-chairman for the fair, said. “Our goal in working on this event is to provide services and support to Sequim families to help children succeed in school.”
Stuff the Bus, an annual school supplies donation drive event, is planned for 2-6 p.m. Friday, Aug. 5, at the Sequim Walmart.
The first day of school for the 2016-2017 school year is Aug. 31.
