The Lady Wolves (5-2 in league, 7-3 overall) brought their win streak up to six last week before another close loss to the Olympic League leading Olympic Trojans (7-0, 10-1).
Sequim won its sixth game on Oct. 4 with a 3-0 win at home against Bremerton (0-7) as three girls scored in the first half.
The Wolves pushed hard and controlled the ball most of the first half keeping it close to the Knights’ goal. Forward Abby Hansted pressed early scoring unassisted three minutes in followed by midfielder Adare McMinn scoring unassisted from the top of the goal box at 7 minutes into the first half. The Knights’ goalkeeper had McMinn’s shot but it slipped through her hands.
Freshman Jessica Dietzman capped the Wolves’ scoring off to go up 3-0 at 27 minutes in.
For the game, Sequim had 17 shots and goalkeeper Claire Henninger made four saves.
Sequim head coach Derek Vander Velde said the game “was a wonderful display of soccer and the team is really finding a rhythm to their play.”
Two days later, the Wolves traveled to Bremerton to avenge a 1-0 loss to Olympic on Sept. 13.
However, wet conditions in an away game may have led the team to tougher times in the 2-0 loss to the Trojans on Oct. 6.
Vander Velde said the Wolves struggled to string their passes together and find the back of the net, but he said they remained determined and gritty.
“It was a highly intense game and the Wolves made the Trojans fight hard for their goals (one in each half),” Vander Velde said.
“Despite going down a goal in the first half, the Wolves fought hard to come back and never stopped playing with 100 percent effort,” he said.
“I am continually impressed by their resiliency, toughness and most of all their drive to fight.”
He commended the Wolves’ defense and said Henninger made some amazing saves.
For the game Sequim had five shots on goal.
Sequim started its six-game winning streak in Coupeville on Sept. 15, which continued with wins over North Mason, North Kitsap, Port Angeles and Kingston.
This week, the Wolves hosted Coupeville on Oct. 11 and they host North Mason on Oct. 13.
