Museum exhibit shows local agricultural history

A new exhibit at the Museum and Arts Center spotlights one of Sequim’s earliest economic foundations. “Farms & Barns to 1916,” opens Friday, Jan. 21, at the MAC Exhibit Center, 175 W. Cedar St., Sequim.

The exhibit features historical photographs of the earliest Sequim-Dungeness Valley barns, many of which no longer exist, as well as farm-related artifacts and a painted backdrop of the Olympic Mountains created exclusively for the exhibit.

Leading up to the Sequim centennial celebration in 2013, future additions to the exhibit will focus on eras such as 1917-1935 and 1936-1960, illustrating the changing nature of Sequim valley farming over the past 100 years.

“We’re exhibiting in installments to show how social, scientific and industrial changes impacted the farming community,” said Lyn Fiveash, MAC history exhibits coordinator.

“Farming was the economic basis of our town and we must honor this memory because it has shaped what we are now.”
