Habitat for Humanity of Clallam County recently sent nearly $30,000 to help Ukrainian refugees with housing needs in neighboring countries following the Russian invasion.
CEO Colleen Robinson said the local organization’s board of directors agreed to send $21,000 in undesignated funds (from unspecified donations from January-June) to Habitat for Humanity International. She said funds help refugees with rent, clothing and “whatever they need to begin anew in a new country.”
Both Port Angeles and Sequim’s stores also raised almost $900 in July with customer donations for refugees, too.
Robinson said she brought the idea up to staff and they were on board, and some even held competitions to recruit the most donations.
For undesignated funds, Robinson said the board of directors votes quarterly on benefactors for the fund.
Since 1991, the local organization has donated more than $400,000 internationally with donations largely going to El Salvador relief efforts the first 10 years.
Habitat for Humanity International typically sends lists for local agencies to assist countries in need, Robinson said, with items such as stoves, clean water wells, and more.
Habitat for Humanity, a global nonprofit housing organization, helps individuals and families in 70 countries and all 50 states. The agency is a Christian housing ministry that welcomes people of all races, religions, and backgrounds, Robinson said.
