The Port of Port Angeles wants the world to see how beautiful John Wayne Marina can be.

The addition of a new weather station and Web camera also adds security for those who have boats moored at the harbor.

"The camera should point to the southeast, looking across the marina from the harbormaster’s office, picking up boats, breakwater, conditions of water in the bay and possibly a bit of the mountains," marinas and airport manager Jeff Robb said. "Then the weather station is there to provide weather conditions, especially wind and rain, for anyone who’s interested to look it up online."

The entire setup will cost about $2,500, an inexpensive way to continue the port’s goal of economic development, according to Robb.

"We see this as a marketing tool for the community and the marina, which is a spectacular sight, especially if you have never seen it before," Robb said. "We can’t see why KING5 News wouldn’t want to show real-time weather and photos of one of the best looking marinas around."

Robb said the port’s information technology expert once worked for the Seattle-based television broadcast station and the equipment and software would be set up to the station’s standards, ready to be put on the news.

"We installed some components today," Robb said Feb. 27. "We will have to test what our computers and networks can handle before putting both services online and announcing how often the camera will

update photos."

The camera and software are state of the art. Robb said the port delayed its order and installation in order to get the most recent updates of both technologies.

"We believe many patrons of the marina will be using this station to see when they need to come and better secure their boats for a storm or to see when it’s ideal to go sailing or out on the water," Robb said. "It is very similar to what the New Dungeness Lighthouse has out at the end of the spit."

The camera and weather station will give a glimpse into yet another microclimate of Sequim. Others include the lighthouse station, one at Peter Black Real Estate in downtown Sequim and several others dotting the landscape on private homes north and west of town.
