High Schoolers floating new concepts

Sequim High School freshmen participated in the SeaPerch underwater robotics program competition in Louisiana on May 20-21

Sequim High School freshmen Porter Funston and Flora Walchenbach participated in the SeaPerch underwater robotics program competition in Louisiana on May 20-21, with advisor Caleb Gentry, their robotics teacher from Sequim Middle School.

The “Sequim Squids” as their team is named, came in 58th overall out of 75 high schools from across the country, earning points in the categories of Obstacle (59), Challenge (66) and Poster (24), for a total of 149 points. The competition, held at the Louisiana State University campus in Baton Rouge, saw more than 150 teams competed in a juried poster competition and in-pool technical events with their SeaPerch ROVs.

“It was a good experience,” Gentry said.
