The Ice Bucket Challenge found its way to Sequim on Monday.

Nineteen staff with Sequim Home Depot, 1145 W. Washington St., poured buckets filled with ice water on themselves to promote awareness for the ALS Foundation, who researches a cure for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Sue Hasenpflug, an employee with Home Depot, said staffers thought of the idea Monday morning after seeing other officials within the company pour ice water on themselves.

Gina Hanna, Sequim store manager, challenged nine other Home Depots in its district to do the same as them or donate to the foundation. She said as of Tuesday afternoon, seven stores accepted the challenge.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has gained national attention in only a few days as thousands of people including dignitaries and celebrities are posting videos of themselves doing the challenge.

Participants are doing the challenge differently by either donating $10 and dumping the ice water and challenging someone to do the same or donate $100, or by not donating and/or collecting a different amount and challenging someone else to do it or donate. As of Monday, ALS reports it’s raised more than $15.6 million.
