Sequim’s iconic granary is going up for auction.

The historical Clallam Co-op granary and former El Cazador site at 531 W. Washington St. goes to the highest bidder at 10 a.m. Friday, May 9, in the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., in Port Angeles.

The building, formerly owned by Hilda Rodriguez, is held by Whidbey Island Bank with Hutchison & Foster in Lynwood serving as trustees. R. Scott Hutchison is the grantor of the site.

Staff with Hutchison & Foster said expenses are still being incurred on the building and a starting bid amount won’t be determined until late next week.

Maggie Roth, owner of Roth Associates, who leads some local public auctions, said the auction was postponed from April 25 to May 9.

In the legal statement about the building, the total monthly payments, late charges, post maturity interest and delinquent real estate tax reimbursement places the site at $912,644.11. Rodriguez owed $757,862.61 of a $800,000 mortgage from 2008. The Clallam County Assessor’s Office appraises the site at $865,439.

Gary Morgan, registered agent of EC Sequim Properties, LLC, previously said they were attempting to sell the building prior to it going to auction for $600,000. He could not be reached for further comment.

Rodriguez owned the Sequim El Cazador and the Oak Harbor El Cazador, however an employee said that Rodriguez is allegedly no longer affiliated with it either. Phone calls and e-mails to her were not returned.

Sequim’s El Cazador served as a landmark business for 33 years before closing on March 3 due to declining revenues, Morgan said. The grain elevator’s site dates back to the early 20th century.
