Learn of lavender from the farmers

Local lavender farmers Michael and Sue Shirkey discuss cultivating, cooking with and distilling lavender at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 6, at the Master Gardener Demonstration Garden at 2711 Woodcock Road, Sequim.

They will explain the varieties best suited for growing on the Olympic Peninsula, growing techniques and propagation. They will share culinary recommendations and demonstrate the lavender oil distillation process.

The Shirkeys have owned Port Williams Lavender Farm since 1999. They grow lavender for U-pick, harvest it for dried bundles and buds, and distill lavender on the farm into essential oil. They have created a variety of home, bath and culinary products.

Part of the Class Act at Woodcock Garden series, sponsored by the Master Gardener Foundation of Clallam County the first and third Saturdays of the month, the presentation is free and open to the public.

A free plant clinic follows the presentation, from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at the Woodcock Demonstration Garden.

Trained Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions about gardening issues. Call 417-2279 with questions.
