Marine Sanctuary appoints advisory members

NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary recently announced three new members to serve on its sanctuary advisory council.

NOAA’s Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary recently announced three new members to serve on its sanctuary advisory council.

The newly appointed advisory council members are Michael Barton, education; Thomas Burlingame, fishing; and Cedar Shannon, tourism/economic development alternate.

Barton is retired emeritus professor of biology at Centre College and resides in Sequim. He completed his Ph.D. in fisheries with a minor in oceanography from Oregon State University.

Burlingame co-owns and operates Excel Fishing Charters and The Inn at Neah Bay with his wife, Dora. He has served as an advisor to the Department of Fish and Wildlife on recreational fishing issues.

Shannon is the environmental and facilities manager at Kalaloch Lodge.

Sanctuary advisory council members serve three-year terms and have public meetings several times per year.

Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary is administered by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and encompasses about 3,189 square miles off the Washington Coast, extending from Cape Flattery to the mouth of the Copalis River.
