The 2015 Violet Richardson Award winner is Sequim High School senior Katherine Landoni.
The Violet Richardson Award is awarded to a girl in high school whose volunteer activities help to make the world a better place for women and girls. The award is named for a Soroptimist and honors the importance of volunteer service in improving the quality of life in the community.
Landoni has worked as a math tutor and science mentor for the Sequim Middle School Science Club since her freshman year. As Science Club president, she organized fundraisers and helped young science students prepare for the annual Science and Engineering Fair. The students conducted original research, created display boards and competed against other students.
“Because of my success in science and math, I have become an important model, tutor and mentor for the younger, female Science Club students,” Landoni said. She said she wants girls to understand that females can do an equal or better job in science and math than males.
The award brings with it a check for $250 for the Sequim Middle Science Club and one for the same amount for Landoni in honor of her volunteering.
