Norman and Ione Melos of Sequim marked their 67th wedding anniversary this spring and will celebrate it and her 90th birthday with friends and family at Sequim Health and Rehab Center, 650 W. Hemlock St., beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 11. He turned 90 on May 21.
They met at a dance in Des Moines, Iowa, and said “it was love at first sight.” Norman R. Melos and Ione Heffelmeier were married April 23, 1949, in Ackley, Iowa. Over six decades of marriage they shared their love of dancing and golf.
He served with the U.S. Marines during World War II, attended Iowa State University in Ames, and started his own manufacturing company, which the couple owned for 34 years. She was the firm’s secretary and also taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Pella, Iowa.
They have two children, Dr. Linda Melos of Sequim, and Richard Melos of Lynchburg, Va.
