Run for the Money … for the Food Bank

With the help of RE/MAX Fifth Avenue, various members of the Sequim Association of Realtors, friends and family members, Marcus Oden of RE/MAX was able to fundraise $1,300 dollars for running his first marathon — the North Olympic Discovery Marathon in early June — for the Sequim Food Bank. Here he donates a check to food bank director Mark Ozias last week. “The main reason I chose the food bank for my fundraiser is because hunger is a silent affliction and you can’t tell when someone is struggling with it,” Oden said. “They do incredible work at the Sequim Food Bank and I wanted to surprise them with a gift that will help provide meals for those who are in need of a little help.”

Ozias said the food bank set a record in May 2014 for busiest day (147 families) and busiest May-to-date. Ozias also said the food bank spent 20 percent more purchasing food in the first quarter of 2014 than it did in the first quarter of 2013 — a result of increased need, rising food costs and waste reduction efforts at major grocery chains, he said.
