Sequim grad finishes basic military training, Carey graduates from Linfield College and more.

Salute to airman Jenkins

Air Force Airman Alexander H. Jenkins graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Jenkins earned distinction as an honor graduate. The airman is a 2011 graduate of Sequim High School. He is the son of Jetedia D. Kaetterhenry and Tammera C. Jenkins of Sequim. Jenkins completed an intensive, eight-week program that included training in military discipline and studies, Air Force core values, physical fitness, and basic warfare principles and skills.

Carey graduates

Zane Carey of Sequim graduated from Linfield College in McMinnville, Ore., on June 1 with a bachelor of science degree in exercise science. Carey was one of 743 candidates for degrees at the school.

Clallam gets grant for recycling

Local governments in Washington receive d10 grants totaling $304,651 to support waste reduction and recycling projects in six counties, including two projects in Clallam County. Statewide, the Washington Department of Ecology granted over $1 million for 24 projects at the local and county levels. Ecology’s Coordinated Prevention Grant program funds the projects.

Clallam County will use $4,302 to start a rural recycling initiative. The county also will use $7,767 to set up compost demonstration sites.

Jefferson County will use $15,832 to run mobile events to collect moderate-risk waste.

Tharinger honored

The Association of Washington Cities announced last week that five state legislators are recipients of the association’s 2014 Municipal Champions Award, including Rep. Steve Tharinger (D-Sequim).

The association is a nonprofit entity representing all 281 cities and towns in Washington state. The group announced Municipal Champions award recipients for legislators who played a leading role to help restore and strengthen the partnership between the state and cities during the 2014 Legislative Session.
