Thanksgiving Day dinner

Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4760 hosts a traditional Thanksgiving Day dinner from 1-3:30 p.m Nov. 27 at the VFW building, 169 E. Washington St., Sequim.

The complimentary meal is for all veterans, their families, widows and widowers. Members of the community also are invited.

Raffle basket to benefit United Way

The staff at the Olympic Medical Center Cancer Center in Sequim has put together a basket for raffle with the proceeds to go to United Way of Clallam County. Among the goodies, the basket contains a free air flight with Jon Bernhoft in his private plane, wine, wine goblets, chocolates, a QFC gift certificate and much more. Items in the basket are worth nearly $1,100. Raffle tickets are available at the main lobby desk, 844 N. Sequim Ave.

Fill a shoe box for

Operation Christmas Child

Eastern Hills Community Church, 81A Savannah Lane, Carlsborg, will serve as a drop-off location for the annual Operation Christmas Child, sponsored by the international nonprofit organization Samaritan’s Purse. Secret Santa Toy Drive under way

Sleep County USA’s Secret Santa Toy Drive is under way now through Dec. 14. This year, make a difference in a foster child’s life by donating unwrapped new toys, games, books and movies for children of all ages. Items can be donated at Sequim Sleep Country USA, 1041 W. Washington St., Sequim.

Enjoy Thanksgiving dinner

Serenity House will offer a traditional community Thanksgiving dinner from 1-4 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 27, at the adult shelter, 2321 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Nature Mart holiday activities

Dungeness River Audubon Center at Railroad Bridge Park, 2151 W. Hendrickson Road, Sequim, hosts its second annual Holiday Nature Mart from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 22. There will be crafts for children and adults, door prizes, make-and-take arrangements and decorations, music and refreshments throughout the day.

The Northwest Raptor Center will show its birds of prey from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Donations of bird seed, cat and dog food, and cleaning supplies for the Raptor Center will be welcomed.

All proceeds support the education programs of the Audubon center. Last year nearly $1,000 was raised for the center.

Streamkeepers recruiting

volunteers for storm water project

Streamkeepers, Clallam County’s volunteer stream monitoring program, is seeking volunteers to help conduct a new storm water monitoring project in the Sequim area. This project, funded by a three-year EPA grant, aims to assess and address storm water problems in the Sequim area. Volunteer opportunities include taking samples in streams and ditches during rain events, performing water tests on samples, tracking rainfall and interviewing landowners. Caregivers holds food drive

Caregivers Home Health offices in Sequim and Port Angeles will have a food drive through Thanksgiving. All food collected will go to the Sequim and Port Angeles food banks. The Sequim office is located at 136 S. Second Ave., the Port Angeles office is at 3228 E. Highway 101.

announces beach closure

The state of Washington has closed the Strait of Juan de Fuca from Dungeness Spit westward to Cape Flattery for the harvest of all species of shellfish and Discovery Bay and Sequim Bay beaches for the harvest of butter clams. The closure was triggered after samples collected showed elevated levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning (PSP) toxin. Volunteer Hospice

plans open house

Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County will host an open house from noon-3 p.m. Monday, Nov. 24, at 810 S. Albert St., Port Angeles. There will be light refreshments and lots of thank-yous to the board of directors, volunteers, community members, physicians and organizations that have supported Volunteer Hospice of Clallam County during its 30 years of service in Clallam County.

Santa’s breakfast set for Dec. 13

The 17th-annual Breakfast With Santa is scheduled for 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Dec. 13, at the Sequim High School cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Breakfast includes waffles, scrambled eggs, ham, juice and coffee. Cost is $5 for adults, $3 for children.

Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive by fire truck at 8:30 a.m. and are available for pictures.

All proceeds go to the Citizens for Sequim Schools.

Sequim settles dispute

over slope erosion

Following a 30-minute executive session at its Nov. 10 meeting, the city council unanimously approved a settlement with Lakeside Industries for repairs to a collapsed slope above a section of Olympic Discovery Trail between Whitefeather Way and the eastern city limit. The city will pay about $9,000 for the materials and Lakeside will pay for the labor and other costs, said city attorney Craig Ritchie.

The section was completed in June 2007 at a cost of about $250,000. In December 2007, following a period of particularly heavy rain, several points along the slope above the trail began eroding and creating gullies. Interim Public Works director Bill Bullock emphasized that it was not the trail itself that had collapsed but the slope above it.
