collects school supplies
It’s back to school time on the Olympic Peninsula and First Federal once again has joined the America’s Promise Alliance to ensure that children in area communities have the supplies they need as they head back to school. Beginning Aug. 15, red wagons will be located in each of First Federal’s eight branches. Community members are encouraged to help fill the wagons with school supplies including paper, pencils, glue sticks, scissors, notebooks and more. Everything donated will be given to local charities for distribution to children in need. First Federal is located at 333 N. Sequim Ave.
Learn to photograph birds
David Gluckman, an environmental lawyer who has been photographing nature and wildlife for more than 30 years, will teach tips and techniques to enhance bird photography skills, beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23, at Wild Birds Unlimited in Gardiner. Seating is limited. A $5 donation will go to the Northwest Raptor Center. Call 797-7100 to reserve a spot in the class.
OTA hosts volunteer picnic
Olympic Theatre Arts will host a member and volunteer appreciation picnic from 3-6 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 16, in the theater parking lot at 414 N. Sequim Ave. Hot dogs and soft drinks will be provided with music by Sequimarimba Band. This will be an opportunity for members and volunteers to see the progress made on the new theater and to learn about the 2008-2009 season. Members who bring a friend who becomes a new member will receive a free gift.
Working the trails
Peninsula Trails Coalition is holding a work party from 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23. Volunteers will be working on weed control and trail maintenance in central Sequim. Meet at the Sequim Middle School parking lot on Hendrickson Road. Bring sun gear, water to drink and weed removal tools. OTC will provide lunch for those who RSVP by noon Thursday, Aug. 21. ‘Drive hammered, get nailed’
emphasis begins
Law enforcement throughout Clallam County will be on a mission to remove impaired drivers from the roadways between Aug.15 and Sept.1. Participating in this summer’s "Drive hammered, get nailed" enforcement campaign are the Sequim Police Department, the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office and the Washington State Patrol.
Although this is a special two-week emphasis, extra DUI patrols have been taking place statewide since Feb. 15 as part of a program called X52: Extra patrols, every week.
Since February, with these additional DUI patrols, Clallam County law enforcement has stopped 266 motorists, written 156 tickets and arrested two impaired drivers.
Museum shows its artifacts
The Museum and Arts Center in Sequim will host a Museum Field Day from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 23 at its administrative building, 544 N. Sequim Ave., south of the Sequim Library and across from the old Sequim High School building. MAC will open its doors to show artifacts from its collections that never have been on exhibit, including antique farming equipment, tools, business machines, clothing and more items waiting for exhibit space in the future new museum. Members of the Washington Old Time Fiddlers will entertain throughout the day. The Sequim Gazette will have a full story on the event in the Aug. 20 edition.
Series discusses food crisis
A three-part series addressing the food crisis and how to survive it begins Aug. 22 with Dr. Curtis Beus, the area’s Washington State University Extension director, with a discussion of the global food system. On Saturday, Aug. 23, Dr. Patricia McEachrane-Gross, a family and preventive medicine physician, will discuss how food is important to health and healing and on Sunday, Aug. 24, Beth Oakes, an environmentalist and Master Gardener, shows how to begin a home garden project that will improve food security, nutrition, exercise and finances. Take the bus to the county fair
Clallam County Transit will offer service to the fairgrounds during the Clallam County Fair, Thursday through Saturday. All fixed-route passengers will pay 25 cents per boarding countywide with no zone fares. Clallam County Transit will have an information booth and display at the fair near the west gate of the fairgrounds to assist with transportation needs and service coordination. 2 Sequim men injured
in central Washington crash
Aaron McElhose and Shane Rego, both of
Sequim, were injured early Sunday morning.
McElhose, 32, was listed in critical condition Monday at a Yakima hospital a day after authorities said he fell out of a moving pickup truck about eight miles west of Quincy, the Wenatchee World reported.
Rego, 34, sustained injuries in the incident, was treated at Quincy Valley Medical Center and released the same day, a hospital spokeswoman told the newspaper.
McElhose and Rego were "thrown out" of the back of a pickup going north on Crescent Bar Road, said Courtney Conklin, patrol chief deputy of the Grant County Sheriff’s Office.
Donation accounts for both McElhose and Rego families have been set up at First Federal bank branches.
