Paul H. Conner
Paul H. Conner, former Washington state senator from the 24th District, died on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008. He was known throughout the Olympic Peninsula for his service in the state Legislature from 1957 to 1992. He enjoyed the confidence of his constituents by being re-elected for 35 consecutive years after his initial appointment to the Senate in 1957. In 1959 he was first elected to the House and served there until 1977, when he was elected to the Senate each year until 1992.
He served on numerous committees as a strong advocate for the residents of Olympic Peninsula, and chaired the Transportation Committee for several years, which led to many major road improvements including the U.S. Highway 101 corridor benefiting his community for many years. While in the House (1959-77) he served on the following committees: Public Utilities – vice chairman; Constitution, Elections & Apportionment; Education; Fisheries; Highways, Natural Resources & Ecology; Social & Health Services; Transportation. In the Senate (1977-92) he served on the following committees: Judiciary; Natural Resources (vice chairman); Transportation, Constitutions & Elections; State Government, Economic Development & Labor, Agriculture & Water Resources.
Although his most important service to his beloved community of Clallam, Jefferson, Mason and part of Thurston counties was accomplished in Olympia, he enjoyed active memberships in community service organizations including the Fraternal Order of the Eagles (past president), the Toastmasters International, the National Conference of State Legislatures, The Veterans of Foreign Wars and the Benevolent & Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) Lodge in Sequim and Port Angeles.
Mr. Conner attended Port Angeles High School, graduating in 1943. He joined the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a radioman and his ship served in various task force convoys in the Pacific and even followed Gen. MacArthur and the USS Missouri into Tokyo Bay to receive the surrender in 1945.
Following his service, he attended Port Angeles Business College, Western Washington State College, University of Washington and Peninsula College. His numerous jobs on the Olympic Peninsula included working for the Public Utility District in Port Angeles and later as a longshoreman in the International Longshoremen’s Union Local 27 in Port Angeles before he retired in 1990.
Mr. Conner and his wife of 59 years, Thelma (nee Thompson), raised their family in the Port Angeles and Sequim area beginning in 1948. He is survived by Thelma, his children, Edward, Paula, Karen, Kevin and Sheri and their spouses, 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A private burial service will be conducted soon. A public memorial service will be held at a time and location to be determined. An announcement will be made in the local press, and all of his many friends will be invited to celebrate the life of this public servant and friend to many.
Gene LeRoy Shores
A celebration of life service for Sequim resident Gene LeRoy Shores will be held at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 9, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 S. Blake Ave., Sequim. The Rev. Bill Gordon will preside.
Dr. Shores died Jan. 12, 2008, at the age of 79.
He was born June 17, 1928, in Medford, Ore., to Orval and Edith Copinger Shores.
He served in the United States Marine Corps.
He married Gail Guggensbickler on July 19, 1997, in Sequim.
A doctor of veterinary medicine, he practiced in the California cities of Huntington Beach, Pacific Palisades and Ridgecrest and lived for many years in California.
He lived in Kansas while attending the school of veterinary medicine at Kansas State.
He enjoyed sailing, tennis, golf, skiing and bicycling. His bicycle tours included 100-mile century rides along the California coast and a tour of Ireland.
His travels included Europe, the Mediterranean, Caribbean, Africa, Hawaii, Tahiti, Canada and Mexico. He also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and reading.
A member of the Olympic Peninsula Porsche Club, he also was a former member of Rotary and Veterinary Association in Southern California.
He is survived by his wife, Gail; son Michael Shores of Los Angeles; daughter Kathleen Shores Rice of Long Beach, Calif.; brother Robert Shores of Medford, Ore.; and two grandsons.

Jack Neal Richardson
A celebration of life for former Sequim resident Jack Neal Richardson will be held Feb. 2 in Buckley. Mr. Richardson died Jan. 20, 2008, at the age of 58, as a result of a car accident.
He was born May 26, 1949, in Port Townsend, to Richard and Virginia Richardson.
He went to school in Quilcene and graduated from Sequim High School.
While serving in the Army, he was stationed in Korea where he met his wife, Donna.
Always the practical jokester, Mr. Richardson delighted in playing jokes on anyone, young and old.
He is survived by his wife, Donna in Mukilteo; sons and daughter-in-law Bob of Portland, Tom and Linda of Renton; daughter Sue of St. Thomas U.S. Virgin Islands; aunts, uncles and cousins.
His parents preceded him in death.
After retirement, the Richardsons planned to move back to Quilcene and live in the house where he grew up.

William G. Magrs
No service was reported for Sequim resident William G. Magrs, who died Jan. 25, 2008, at the age of 72 from complications following a heart attack.
He was born June 17, 1935, in South Shields, England, to William and Jennie Sanderson Magrs.
He married Ingeborg Voss Magrs on July 8, 1972, in Seattle.
He was a marine electrician who lived in England and Seattle before moving to Sequim, where he lived for the past 15 years.
He was a member of Dungeness Golf Club and enjoyed traveling in his beloved England.
He is survived by his wife, Ingeborg Magrs of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Anthony and Karen Magrs of England; daughters and sons-in-law Laureve Gray and Phil Hutchison and Cheryl and Mark Whittaker, all of England; brothers and sisters-in-law Pat and Jean Magrs; Michael and Joan Magrs; and Robert and Vi Magrs, all of England; sister and brother-in-law Jean and John Penman of England; stepson and daughter-in-law Bruce and Lynn Stinshoff of California; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Joyce L. Davis
A memorial service for Sequim resident Joyce L. Davis will be held at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, March 1, at Sequim Elks Lodge, 135 Port Williams Road.
Mrs. Davis died Jan. 13, 2008, at the age of 63 of cancer.
She was born March 23, 1944, in Port Angeles to George A. and Nina M. Towne Danielson.
She married William F. Davis on Nov. 16, 1979, in Port Angeles.
She was married to Lester Ellis from 1962-1978. They divorced.
A transportation supervisor at Sequim School District from 1977-2003, she was nicknamed “Mother Hen.”
She enjoyed camping, reading, spending time with family and cooking.
She was a member of the Teamsters Union.
She is survived by her husband, William F. Davis; son Robbie Davis of Port Angeles; daughters Michelle Lynn and Shirley Ellis of Sequim; Deena Davis of Auburn; Darcy Allen of Topeka, Kans.; and Dani Winter of Beaverton, Ore.; brothers Wayne Danielson of Port Angeles; Lyle Danielson of Marysville; and Gary Danielson of Tumwater; 19 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Elizabeth Creelman
A memorial service has been held for Port Angeles resident Elizabeth Creelman, who died Jan. 22, 2008, at the age of 71 of pneumonia.
She was born Oct. 28, 1936, in Berlin, Germany, to Walter and Martha Toll Shulte.
She married William Albert Creelman in 1980. He preceded her in death in March 2001.
She took many courses in criminal justice, nursing and teaching.
She worked as a nanny, high school teacher, day care worker, home health aide and nursery worker, while living in New York, N.Y., Miami, Fla., and Port Angeles.
A member of Independent Bible Church, she loved children and volunteered in the church nursery until her death.
She was very interested in languages and spoke several. She also sponsored a child through Children of the Nations.
She is survived by her companion Roger Maes of Sequim; sisters-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Herb White; Dorothy Nordstrom; Colleen Storm, and their families.

Dorothy S. Moores
A service has been held for Dorothy S. Moores.
She was born in 1926 to Thomas and Nina Roesener Smart.
A graduate of Monson High School and a lifelong Monson, Mass., resident, she worked at CF Church Company in Monson for many years and retired from Jarvis and Jarvis in Palmer, Mass.
She was a member of the Monson United Methodist Church and active with the women’s group at church.
She also was an active member of the Down to Earth Garden Club.
She is survived by her children Lyman T. Moores II and his wife, Melodee, of Sequim; Donna M. Reynolds and her husband, Joseph, of Princeton, Mass.; and Barbara J. Lippert and her husband, Michael, of Sequim; eight grandchildren; and many nephews and nieces.
In addition to her husband, Lyman T. Moores, she was preceded in death by brothers Thomas and Ernest Smart and sisters Janet Priore and Jessie Clark.

Kathleen Watts
No service was reported for Sequim resident Kathleen Watts, who died Jan. 25, 2008, at the age of 96.
She was born in 1911 in East Liverpool, Ohio, to Charles and Calvie Alford.
She married Raymond Watts in Glendale, Calif. He preceded her in death in 1982.
A homemaker, Mrs. Watts enjoyed gardening, photography and jewelry making.
She is survived by her daughters and son-in-law Louise and Robert Bellmore of Sequim and Joy Pestell of Bass Lake, Calif.; brother Bruce Alford of Long Beach, Calif.; sisters Jo Jorgenson of Port Angeles; Imogene Baker and Doris Stokes of Long Beach, Calif.; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
