Medora Wolff

A memorial service for Port Angeles resident Medora Wolff will be held at 11 a.m. Feb. 7 at St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church, 510 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles. The Rev. Vincent Murray will preside. A reception follows the service. 

Mrs. Wolff died Jan. 30, 2008, at the age of 86.

She was born Sept. 4, 1921, in Bonduel, Wis., to Arthur and Tomah Marquardt Backhaus.

She graduated from Shawano High School in Shawano, Wis., in 1939.

She graduated from a school of cosmetology in Green Bay, Wis., and worked as a cosmetologist in Manitowoc, Wis.

She also worked as a cosmetologist and as the city librarian in Deer Lodge, Mont.

She married Frank Wolff on Dec. 12, 1944, in Great Falls, Mont. He preceded her in death on March 23, 1970.

She enjoyed gardening, knitting, reading, art and walking on the waterfront.

Mrs. Wolff was a member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church; a Boy and Girl Scout leader; a member of St. Andrew’s Altar Guild in Port Angeles and St. James’ Altar Guild in Deer Lodge, Mont.; a Pink Lady volunteer at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles and an election judge in Port Angeles.

She is survived by her stepson and daughter-in-law Richard and Nancy Wolff of Lake Villa, Ill.; stepdaughter and son-in-law Sally Anne and Norbert Giebel of El Dorado, Wis.; daughters and son-in-law Lianna and Rolland Karlin of Big Timber, Mont., Michele Wolff of Port Angeles and Claudette Wolff of Bloomfield, New Mexico; sister Marjorie McDaniel of Sunnyside; 30 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her son Thomas Wolff, stepson Robert Wolff and sister Jeanette Nelson.

William ‘Bill’ E. Henderson Jr.

A celebration of life for Sequim resident William “Bill” E. Henderson Jr. will be held at 3 p.m. Feb. 17, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 100 N. Blake Ave., Sequim.

Mr. Henderson died Jan. 30, 2008, at the age of 72 of cancer.

He was born March 3, 1935, in Portland, Ore., to Bill and Myrtle Henderson.

He loved sports, fishing, ocean beaches, music, gardening — particularly roses and baking cookies.

He was most proud of his 19 years as a volunteer basketball coach to fourth-sixth graders in the Bethel and Spanaway areas. He was a former resident of the Tacoma area.

A member of Trinity United Methodist Church, he especially enjoyed the fellowship of the men’s Bible study.

He is survived by his wife, Katie, of Sequim; 98-year-old mother Myrtle of Beaverton, Ore.; children Vicki Thomas, Karen Maginnis, Ed and Shane Henderson; stepchildren Sarah and Ted Lan Anh Mills; sisters and brother-in-law Janice Chiapelone, Judy and Jeff Hibler, and Nancy Hedrick; three grandsons and two great-grandsons.

He was preceded in death by his son Steven Howard Henderson.

Jerry Jensen

A memorial service for Jerry Jensen will be held at 2:30 p.m. Feb. 10, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, 525 Fifth Ave., Sequim.

Mr. Jensen died Jan. 18, 2007, at the age of 72.

He was born Aug. 17, 1934, in Scottsbluff, Neb., to Charles C. Jensen and Maxine White Jensen Richards. The family moved from Denver, Colo., to Burien where attended school. Upon graduation, he received a scholarship in music to attend Western State College in Bellingham. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1959, where he began his 50-year broadcasting career. Mr. Jensen spent two years as floor director for KIRO-TV in Seattle. He found his niche in radio sales and worked in several radio stations before moving to Anchorage, Alaska in 1979.

For 14 years, he was an account executive, selling advertising. He retired from the Anchorage Media Group in November 2007.

He was a member of the Anchorage Barber Shop Chorus, The Midnight Sons. He was equally loyal to his family, friends, co-workers and clients.

True to his generous nature, he gave the gift of sight through donation of his eyes.

He is survived by his wife, Marsha Jensen; sons David Jensen and Eric Jenson of Anchorage, Alaska; daughters Diane Kaylor of Palmer, Alaska; Nancy Mayer of Mountlake Terrace; stedaughter, Lara McFarland; mother Maxine Y. Richards; sister Yolanda Brandon of Sequim; brother Jan Jensen of Quilcene; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles C. Jensen.

Evelyn Etta Swift

A memorial service for Sequim resident Evelyn Etta Swift will be held on her birthday, July 3, at Sequim Seventh-day Adventist Church.

Mrs. Swift died Jan. 23, 2008, at the age of 89.

She was born July 3, 1918, in Ruthven, Iowa, to Goral Orville and Mabel Etta Dorland Potter.

She graduated from Moorehead State Teachers College in Moorehead, Minn.

Mrs. Swift was a schoolteacher, homemaker and also was self-employed.

She enjoyed needlework, crochet and quilting.

She was a member of Seventh-day Adventist Church.

She is survived by her sons and daughter-in-law Charles Keith and Ellen Klinke and Seldon H. Klinke Jr. of Texas; daughters and sons-in-law Sandra Klinke and Lloyd Cripe of Panama and Sally Kaye Klinke and George Meyer of Longview; sister Alice Potter Kainz of Tenino; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husbands, Seldon Howard Klinke and Lee Swift.

Geraldine Gatzke

A service for Sequim resident Geraldine Gatzke will be held at a later date in California. Mrs. Gatzke died Jan. 30, 2008, at the age of 92 of pneumonia.

She was born Jan. 12, 1926, in San Diego, Calif., to Martin and Josephine Lowther Seiveno.

She married Phillip L. Gatzke on Dec. 26, 1967, in Las Vegas, Nev. He preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 2007.

Mrs. Gatzke worked as an aircraft sealer at Rohr Corp. in Chula Vista, Calif.

She is survived by her stepson Donald Gatzke of Colorado Springs, Colo.; daughters and sons-in-law Carol and Richard Sparks of Silver Springs, Nev.; Leslie and Walter Mantz of Sequim; Dolores and John Earhart of Sequim; and Diana and Gilbert Tisnado of Pasadena, Texas; sisters-in-law June Seiveno of Chula Vista, Calif.; and Betty Underhill of Stillwater, Tenn.; 23 grandchildren; 44 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

Ervin M. Stovall

A service has been held for Port Angeles resident Ervin M. Stovall, who died Jan. 29, 2008, at the age of 72 following a long illness.

He was born Sept. 21, 1935, in Port Angeles to Herbert M. and Hazel J. Harbin Stovall.

He grew up in Joyce, and then moved to Port Angeles.

He married Shirley J. Bay on Aug. 20, 1960, in Port Angeles.

Mr. Stovall worked at Crown Zellerbach Paper Co. and then worked as a log truck owner and operator, at which time he was known as “Gator.”

He loved the outdoors, fishing, hunting, camping and family gatherings.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Stovall of Port Angeles; son Melvin Evans; daughters and sons-in-law Lynnette and Thomas Beattie of Fontana, Calif., Susan and Jimie Richmond of Port Angeles, Sindy and Tom Morse of Port Angeles; brothers and sisters-in-law Norman and Agnes Stovall of Port Angeles, Edwin and Norma Stovall of Sequim; and four grandchildren.

William George McMillan

A family get-together will be scheduled at a later date for Sequim resident William George McMillan, who died Jan. 30, 2008, at the age of 87 after a long illness.

He was born Feb. 17, 1920, in Washoe, Mont., to George and Anna Robertine McMillan.

He married Verna Mae Johnson on July 25, 1945, in Ogden, Utah.

He served in the Army between 1941-44 as a master sergeant in the South Pacific.

He completed one year of college.

Mr. McMillan worked in banking management at Sea-1st and Bank of America for 36 years.

Retired from the Sequim Bank of America branch, he lived in Sequim for 28 years.

He enjoyed family activities and loved to fish and crab.

Known as “quite a character,” he had many one-liners.

He was a member of the Presbyterian Church; Veterans of Foreign Wars; Elks, Masons and Lions.

He is survived by his wife, Verna Mae Johnson McMillan of Sequim; son William Craig McMillan of Auburn; daughter Pamela Ann Collins of Auburn; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his brother John McMillan and sister Thelma Vandehei.

Herbert Robert Kottler

A private family service will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Herbert Robert Kottler, who died Jan. 27, 2008, at the age of 85.

He was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Erfurt, Germany, to Valentine F. and Marie Kohler Kottler.

He married Marilyn Elizabeth Michael on April 14, 1951, in Olympia.

He attended University of Washington in Seattle and the United States Maritime Academy.

He served in the United States Merchant Marines from 1941-1950 as first assistant engineer. He served worldwide in all World War II theaters.

Mr. Kottler worked as a marine representative for Union Oil Company in Seattle and as a resident manager for the company in Coos Bay, Ore.

He moved his family to Pullman in 1959, where he sold oil furnaces.

The family moved to Sequim in 1975, where he bought what was then York Rental.

After he bought York Rental, it was renamed D&K Rental and is now owned by family members.

He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed clam and geoduck digging, crabbing, and spending time with his friend Red Ketcham.

He was a member of Lutheran Church of Tacoma; the Masonic Lodge and Veterans Administration.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Michael Kottler; daughters Christine Kottler-Heard and her husband, Doug and Kay M. Kottler-Nichols and her husband, Dick; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his sister, Roberta K. Boyd.

Wanda R. Black

A celebration of life will be held at a later date for Sequim resident Wanda R. Black, who died Jan. 19, 2008, at the age of 92 of pneumonia/heart failure.

She was born Oct. 26, 1915, in Corona, Calif., to Thomas Nichelson and Daisy Forest Chism Ridgway.

She graduated from Huntington Park High School in Los Angeles, Calif., in 1934. She attended cosmetology courses after high school.

She married Robert Black on Sept. 24, 1972 in Reno, Nev. He preceded her in death on March 13, 2007.

The couple lived in Los Angeles until his retirement. They moved to Gardiner in 1976 and to Sequim in 2003.

Mrs. Black was primarily a homemaker and mother. Earlier, she worked as a bookkeeper for several companies, including Sears. Before she retired, she worked for Litton Industries.

She was a wonderful seamstress who also enjoyed making decorative cakes.

She is survived by her son Robert Thomas Black of Cody, Wyo. and daughter Nancy Lee Bain of Sequim.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brother, who died as an infant, and sisters Christine, Lenora, Frances and Audrey.
