Herb Kottler

A celebration of life for

Sequim resident Herb Kottler will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday, June 15, at the family home. Mr. Kottler died Jan. 27, 2008, at the age of 85. He was born Sept. 10, 1922, in Erfurt, Germany.

Marion Bobb

A celebration of life for former Sequim resident Marion Bobb will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 24, at Dungeness Community Church, 45 Eberle Lane, Sequim. The Rev. Scott Culver will preside.

Mrs. Bobb died April 12, 2008, at the age of 91. She was born Oct. 7, 1916.

Dona Leah Parker

A graveside and memorial service have been held for Port Angeles resident Dona Leah Parker, who died May 30, 2008, at the age of 67 of a heart attack.

She was born Feb. 11, 1941, in Burien, to Jesse Clarence and Sabina Grabinski Torcaso.

She married James Parker in May 1960. He preceded her in death on Aug. 26, 1999. She lived in Eatonville for 25 years while working as a bookkeeper before moving to Port Angeles in November 2007. She enjoyed church, soccer, birds and dolphins. She was a member of Messianic Congregation.

She is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law Steve and Launa Parker of Eatonville, Michael and Erika Parker of Chandler, Ariz.; son-in-law Otto Gershon of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Jan and Sandy Sturm of Everett; a brother and 12 grandchildren with a great-grandchild on the way.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by daughter Cheryl Gershon and one brother.

June Mary ‘Bug’ Swain

A private family service was held for Port Angeles resident June Mary “Bug” Swain, who died May 30, 2008, at the age of 88.

She was born March 21, 1920, in Sheldon, Iowa, to Glenn and Francis Millenkamp Groff.

She married Patrick Martin in Omaha, Neb., in 1938. He preceded her in death in 1960. She married Robert L. Swain on March 21, 1972, in Huntsville, Ala. He also preceded her in death.

Mrs. Swain lived in Southern California until 1989. She moved first to Port Angeles, then to Lake Havasu, Ariz., and then back to Port Angeles. She enjoyed traveling, cooking, quilting and taking care of her family and friends with a lot of love.

She was a member of Queen of Angels Catholic Church.

She is survived by son Patrick Martin of Placerville, Calif., and daughter Mary Earle of Sequim; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Doreen Ida Mae Haytack

A service has been held for former Sequim resident Doreen Ida Mae Haytack, who died June 2, 2008, at the age of 82.

She was born Sept. 21, 1925. Her childhood was spent on the family farm in Lake Saint Anne, Alberta, Canada, where she grew up with five brothers and two sisters.

She married William Haytack on June 8, 1951, in Seattle. They raised six children in Coast Guard style, living in multiple locations up and down the West Coast before settling in the Covington/Maple Valley area. Most recently, the Haytacks lived in Sequim and for the past year in Bonney Lake.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, William Haytack; sons Ronald Haytack of Fremont, Calif., and Bill Haytack of Maple Valley; daughters Devaunna McConnell of Bonney Lake, Vickie Scobba of Auburn, Cindy Dow of Auburn and Tammy Earl of Bonney Lake; 14 grandchildren; and 22 great-grandchildren.

Gladys McQueen

No service has been reported for former Sequim resident Gladys McQueen, who died June 1, 2008, in Redmond, at the age of 88.

She was born Oct. 14, 1919, in Denver, Colo., to Thomas Arthur and Florence Klinefelter Tollefson.

She married Malcolm McQueen on April 18, 1942.

She lived in Sequim for many years and loved the area for its beauty and friendly people.

She is survived by her son, three daughters, three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter.

Stephen Arthur Ritchie

A service has been held for Sequim resident Stephen Arthur Ritchie, who died May 21, 2008, of a ruptured aorta aneurysm at the age of 78.

He was born Oct. 24, 1929, in Great Falls, Mont., to Stephen Paul and Lillian Sidna Porger Ritchie.

He worked in the roundhouse of the Great Northern Railroad in Great Falls. In 1942, he was trained to fly gliders down the Missouri River.

The family moved to the Olympic Peninsula in 1949.

He married Evelyn Joan Failer on Dec. 27, 1952, in Port Angeles.

He was a logger, farmer and square dance caller. He especially enjoyed teaching and calling for the handicapped clubs in Port Angeles and Port Townsend. Mr. Ritchie also ran teen dances for the Agnew Helpful Neighbors Club. He was a life member and treasurer for the Rhododendron Grange 1137.

He is survived by his wife, Joan Ritchie; sons and daughter-in-law Vernon Arthur Ritchie of Carlsborg; Walter Ritchie, FCCM (SW) USN, stationed in Japan on the USS Lasen; Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Matthew Paul and Sherri Linn Ritchie, stationed in Florida; daughters and sons-in-law Viola and Dennis O’Neil and Susan and Kenneth Winters of Port Angeles; his mother, age 94, living in Sequim; brother and sister-in-law George and Margie Ritchie of Port Angeles; sisters and brothers-in-law Lillian Hoover of Port Angeles; Elizabeth and Dick Verley of Little Falls, Minn.; and Roberta Ann and Carl Maki of Great Falls, Mont.; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by daughter Marion S. May in September 1986, brother-in-law Jack Hoover; his father and grandparents.

Neptune Society was in charge of cremation.

Hershal Kendall Buchanan

Sequim resident Hershal Kendall Buchanan died June 8 at the age of 66.

He was born June 27, 1941.
