Bette S. Yamamoto
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. July 26, 2008, at Faith Baptist Church, 7652 Old Olympic Highway, Sequim, for Sequim resident Bette S. Yamamoto.
The Rev. Lonnie Jacobson officiates. A reception follows.
Mrs. Yamamoto died June 5, 2008 at the age of 87.
She was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Lodi, Calif., to Einoshin and Hideno Ono Sakai.
She married George H. Yamamoto in Los Angeles, Calif., on Feb. 28, 1964. He preceded her in death on June 28, 2007.
She is survived by her brother Kay Sakai and sister Jane Price.
Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers Steve Sakai and Yukio Sakai and sister Misue Sakai.

Hubert Lionel Font
A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, July 27, 2008, at Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road, Sequim, for Diamond Point resident Hubert Lionel Font.
Mr. Font died July 6, 2008, at the age of 74.
He was born Nov. 10, 1933, in Baton Rouge, La., to Ben Salvadore and Myrtle Achord Font.
He married Barbara J. Wylie-Barrett on Nov. 18, 1983, in Houston, Texas. He served in the United States Marine Corps from Nov. 16, 1951-July 16, 1952 as a PFC. He was a high school graduate with occupational education in several fields. During his working career, Mr. Font owned a glass company and was a mental health assistant, a concrete company partner, the owner of Slabs Inc. and field superintendent of roads in Montgomery County, Texas. He was a member of Gardiner Community Church and Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Font of Diamond Point; sons Thomas Lionel Font of Colorado; and Hubert Lionel Font Jr. of Palestine, Texas; daughters Beverly Harper of College Station, Texas; Lisa Geare of Woodinville; and Candi Lynn Niver of Waller, Texas; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by 10 brothers and sisters.

Hollis D. Cox
An open house will be held 3-6 p.m. July 26, 2008, at the home of Hollis D. and Maja Cox, 503 Serpentine Ave., Sequim, in honor of Mr. Cox, who died July 18, 2008, at the age of 89.
Born to pioneer stock in the wheat country of Prescott, he embarked on an interesting life at an early age. He graduated from Dayton High School in Washington. He went on to Eastern Washington University, University of Utah and Washington State University. He served in the Army Air Corps during World War II in the Pacific Theater. Mr. Cox married Janet Johnson in Spokane in 1946, the mother of his three children, Karen, Dean and Dana. The young family moved around the country and world as he worked as a school administrator and superintendent. After a long career in the education world and having touched so many lives, he and his partner and wife of 40 years, Maja, settled in Sequim to experience retirement 20 years ago.
Mr. Cox lived an extremely full life and his family rejoices in the knowledge that he was loved by so many. Memorial donations may be made to the Friends of the Port Angeles Fine Arts Center, 1203 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles, WA 98362 or any liberal cause of choice.
Melvin James Baker
A funeral has been held for Sequim resident Melvin James Baker, who died July 12, 2008, at the age of 85.
He was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Sequim to Adam and Gertrude Agnes Ruth Zeman Baker. He graduated from Sequim High School in 1940. He married Shirley Louise Reinke on April 5, 1947, in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. She preceded him in death on April 24, 2008.
He served as a corporal in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Front, including the Philippines and Japan. He was active in combat and scouting duty and received the Purple Heart. He also was part of the postwar restoration crew in Japan. Mr. Baker was very proud to have spent his whole adult life on the farm on Sequim Bay. Other occupations included owning and operating a sawmill, fisherman, welder, mechanic and logger. His farm was his passion, including the cows. He also enjoyed other animals, fishing and tinkering; he could fix anything. He enjoyed his family, children, practical jokes and dancing with his wife at the Chicken Coop Road dance hall. Mr. Baker was a grand pioneer at the 107th Irrigation Festival in 2002.
He is survived by his daughters Jackie Baker of Sequim and Jill Meeker of Rice; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Michael B. Chumley
A service has been held for Sequim resident Michael B. Chumley, who died June 30, 2008, at the age of 51 of a diabetic coma.
He was born Nov. 22, 1956, to Cramel and Bonnie Hudman Chumley.
He and Grace married on May 1, 1981, in Oakland, Calif.
He is survived by his wife, Grace M. Chumley, of Sequim; children Chris and Marie Read of Rexburg, Idaho; Jeffrey Chumley of Sequim; Rachel Chumley of Sequim; brother Don of Bellingham and sister Debbie of Twin Falls, Idaho; sisters-in-law Ann Pavlos, Cotati, Calif.; and Danel Shankey of Valley Springs, Calif.; a grandson; seven nephews; and six nieces.
Donations toward his children’s college education can be made to the Chumley Memorial Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank.
Fay Libby Mattison
No service has been reported for Sequim resident Fay Libby Mattison, who died July 8, 2008, at the age of 83.
She was born Dec. 15, 1924, in Seattle to Martin H. and Mildred Parslow Mattison.
She was a travel agent for Crossroads Travel Company for 40 years, working and living in Hawaii, Bellevue and Sequim. A real communicator, she loved traveling, especially in France and other parts of Europe. She loved plants, including some she inherited from her grandmother in Norway.
She is survived by longtime companion Les Baxter of Sequim and sister Shirley Herpick of Issaquah.

Ruth E. ‘Neka’ Rhyne
A celebration of life will be held at a later date for Port Angeles resident Ruth E. “Neka” Rhyne, who died July 11, 2008, at the age of 59.
She was born Nov. 13, 1948, in Guatemala City, Guatemala, to José and Zoila O. Ayala Pinto.
She married Sal Ping in Compton, Calif., in 1982. They divorced in 1985.
She worked as a certified nurse’s assistant, nurse and home caregiver in Century City; Temple City and Arcadia, Calif., for more than 10 years. She retired to Port Angeles in 1994. She loved swimming, painting and knitting, but most of all she loved people, especially her family. She was a member of Grace Baptist Church, Post-Polio Group and the Port Angeles Senior Center.
She is survived by her son Joe Algara of Ventura, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Maria and Tom Olson of Glendora, Calif.; and Vivian and Juan Carlos Marroquin of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Ronaldo and Sandy Pinto of Belvedere, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

David Brian Charles
A funeral has been held for Port Angeles resident David Brian Charles, who died July 14, 2008, at the age of 56 of cardiac arrhythmia.
He was born July 26, 1951, in Port Angeles to Gilbert Gene and Aina Bolstrom Charles.
He attended Riverside Indian School in Oklahoma and Chemawa Indian School in Oregon. He worked as a fisherman, caretaker and tribal police/security. He also worked for Muckleshoot and 7 Cedars bingo halls. He was a former resident of Auburn. Mr. Charles enjoyed bingo, tribal canoe journeys and cultural activities. He had many close ties with tribal elders from all over who loved and respected him. He was a member of Indian Shaker Church in Port Angeles and Assembly of God Church in Port Angeles.
He is survived by his brothers Dennis “Cos” Charles, Gary Charles and Vernon Charles; sisters Ruth Charles and JoAnn Charles; and a nephew.

Rosemary Hutter
No service was reported for Sequim resident Rosemary Hutter, who died July 8, 2008, at the age of 93.
She was born Feb. 26, 1915, in Pittsburgh, Pa., to Fred and Rose McCullough Keller.
She married Gustave M. Hutter on Aug. 30, 1938, in Pittsburgh.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara Hutter of Sequim, and sister Alice Keller of Baden, Pa.
Margaret R. Kidd
Longtime Port Angeles resident Margaret R. Kidd died July 18, 2008, at the age of 95.
She was born July 21, 1912, in Eden Valley to Eneval and Inger Olson Ronneberg.
