The days of summer are over and our beloved rain has moved in again. If you are like me, you’ve been waiting for days like these to binge watch a good television series or two.
There is a plethora of viewing options to suit every taste at the North Olympic Library System. Check them out this fall! Some of the titles below earn a TV-MA rating for mature content; for personalized viewing (or reading) recommendations, contact your friendly library staff!
A Civil War-era haunting
If you enjoy westerns and early American history, you may like AMC’s “Hell on Wheels.” This series, set in a traveling town that’s helping build the transcontinental railroad in the 1860s, follows former Confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon on his quest for vengeance. With a strong storyline and great acting, “Hell on Wheels” is deliciously gritty; it shows the cost of greed and corruption but also the fortitude of the human spirit.
View-alikes: “Longmire,” “Justified.”
Swords, magic, dragons
With its famously juicy — and sometimes controversial — plotlines, the fantasy series “Game of Thrones” hooked me (and millions more) from the beginning. Its characters are richly-layered — complicated, flawed, often beautiful — that you can’t help but grow to love them, or hate them, and sometimes both. These are performances and cinematography that you’ll want to fall into, and six seasons won’t feel like enough. (Fear not, season seven isn’t far behind.)
Read-alikes: the original series of the same name, by George R.R. Martin.
Scientific romance
My personal favorite in the library’s media collection is “Outlander,” based on Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels of the same name. If you love history, time travel, and have ever wanted to visit Scotland, this series will blow you away.
I learned so much about the Jacobites and early medicine, and it didn’t feel like I was watching an educational DVD. The story, about a nurse in 1945 who is suddenly transported to 1743 Scotland, isn’t always pretty, but that keeps it realistic and draws you in even more. Watching this I felt like I was actually there and left believing there may be some magic in this world after all.
View-alike: “World Without End.”
Detective capers and whodunits
Wit and suspense abound in series like “Sherlock,” “Grantchester” and “Endeavour.” Each show offers fresh interpretations of familiar characters and themes, like Benedict Cumberbatch’s sociopathic Holmes or the whisky-drinking, jazz-loving clergyman of Grantchester. Superbly acted and well-written, these mysteries will keep you guessing to the very end.
View-alike: Try “The Shield” for more modern fare.
