Off the Shelf: September happenings at your library

This July the North Olympic Library System, in collaboration with the North Olympic Library Foundation, introduced its first Tiny Olympic Library in downtown Port Angeles.

The dog (and dry) days of summer are — hopefully — nearing an end and that means an exciting new lineup of fall programming at your library.

But first … some “tiny” news.

This July the North Olympic Library System, in collaboration with the North Olympic Library Foundation, introduced its first Tiny Olympic Library in downtown Port Angeles.

Tiny Olympic Libraries are quaint, self-service browsing portals designed to house small collections of books for locals, travelers and other passersby.

Sequim’s very own Tiny Olympic Library recently was installed in centrally located Seal Street Park. This green and blue library is stocked with titles suitable for every age and reading level, from children’s picture books to literary fiction.

Books in this special collection are yours to share or keep forever — no need to worry about due dates or overdue fines. To return a book, simply drop it off at any Tiny Olympic Library or regular NOLS location. Library staff frequently will refresh the selection, so be sure to visit often and check out what’s new.

NOLS and the North Olympic Library Foundation would like to thank all the community partners who helped make this project possible, including the City of Sequim.

To learn more, visit www.nols.org and select “Tiny Olympic Libraries” from the “Locations/Hours” tab on the homepage.

‘Art in the Library’

The new Art in the Library exhibit, featuring colored pencil illustrations by Sequim-based artist Vana Arnold, will be on display at the library between Sept. 3-Dec. 1. Arnold’s vivid illustrations bring animals to life before your eyes!

To celebrate the opening of the show, a special after-hours reception featuring local barbershop quartet No Batteries Required will be at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4. No Batteries Required features members of the Olympic Peninsula Men’s Chorus, as well as the local chapter of the Barbershop Harmony Society. Bud Davies (baritone), Jim Muldowney (bass), Rich Wyatt (tenor), and Rich Johnston (lead) bring a wealth of experience and infectious joy to their lively interpretations of your favorite hits.

Limited library services will be available during the reception and light refreshments will be served.

‘No Great Mischief’

Sequim’s Second Saturday Book Discussion Group spans genres to bring great works to life in a round table setting. September’s pick is “No Great Mischief” by the Canadian writer Alistair MacLeod and will be discussed at 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at the library.

The novel begins in the “golden month of September,” and uses flashbacks to explore the sagas that enrapture generations of the MacDonald family. Through these lovingly recounted stories — wildly comic or heartbreakingly tragic — readers are invited to unearth the bedrock upon which every family must sometimes rely.

Copies of “No Great Mischief” are available at the library in regular print and large print editions. Request your copy by visiting www.nols.org.

In brief …

• Weekly story times for babies and toddlers resume at the Sequim Library in October and at the Port Angeles Library beginning Sept. 11.

• If you love live music, be sure to visit the Sequim Library at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 18 for a special performance by Finnish folk-pop duo Vellamo. Pia Leinonen and Joni Tiala’s music is characterized by haunting melodies, Pia’s ethereal lead vocals and Joni’s virtuosic guitar stylings. They sing instantly memorable songs in English as well as their native Finnish and also perform traditional ballads from the Celtic and Scandinavian folk traditions.

• A community task force is assembling to explore the possibility of a larger library for the Sequim-Dungeness Valley. For more details about the project, visit www.nols.org and select “Sequim Branch” from the “Locations/Hours” tab on the homepage.

• The 2015 Summer Reading Program, designed to encourage children to read throughout their summer vacations, attracted hundreds of young readers and their families to the library. Weekly outdoor programs, which included visits from magicians, jugglers, musicians and scientists, drew an average audience of 250! Thanks to all the community partners and sponsors that helped make this year’s program a smashing success.
