Humor is a major part of life for my dad and me, so when I reflect on our shared history I tend to gravitate to the funny. At the North Olympic Library System, there are more books about every aspect of fatherhood than you can shake a stick at, from the humorous to the scientific.
A quick search of “fatherhood” in the library system catalog takes you to “Rocking Fatherhood: The Dad-to-Be’s Guide to Staying Cool.” It contains fatherly wisdom from famous dads such as Julian Casablancas of The Strokes and Duff McKagan of Guns ’n’ Roses. That certainly sounds cool to me! This book, published in May, is now shelved with other new non-fiction books; when it joins other titles on the topic of fatherhood, you will find it in the adult non-fiction section under call number 306.8742.
Books like “Sh*t My Dad Says” by Justin Halpern are almost too funny. It certainly is not recommended for anyone who objects to cuss words, because as the book’s title suggests, there are a fair few throughout.
But for those who don’t mind gruff language, you likely will read it in one sitting, laugh uproariously and pick up a few good tidbits of parenting perspective. It can be found in the adult non-fiction section beginning at call number 814.6.
If you are curious about becoming a father, interested in how other people connect with their fathers or want to know what some fathers really think about their children, your local library can provide you with all the reading material you could want.
Below are just a few of the many titles I could recommend:
• Any books written by Bill Bryson
• “Holidays in Heck” by P.J. O’Rourke
• “Good Talk, Dad: The Birds and the Bees … and other Conversations We Forgot to Have” by Willie Geist
• “Jeremy & Dad: A Zits Tribute-ish to Fathers and Sons” by Jerry Scott
• All the “Calvin and Hobbes” books by Bill Waterson
Visit the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., to find these and many more titles.
