Olympic Theatre Arts had its annual volunteer/membership celebration picnic on Saturday, Aug. 14, inside the Olympic Theatre Arts Center. Chairman Elaine Caldwell reminisced how previous picnics were held in the parking lot with the hope of getting a “peek” at the progress inside.
“This year, since the February opening, we celebrated in an air-conditioned gathering hall and the fact that it was over 80 outside, it worked out just fine!”
The picnic was to honor volunteers. The Volunteer of the Year award went to Phil Mortenson, who is part of the building team and faithfully works the sound system for productions.
June and Jerry Echternkamp received the Humble Servant award for their participation in “Cabaret,” Tony Awards dinner and Gala event. Sheila Taylor earned the Never Say No award for her contributions in the costume department.
Other awards went to lighting technician Albert Sanders, the Let There Be Light award; Jayna Ochard, the Welcome Back Kotter for her performance in “Cabaret;” Tom Schaafsma, the Silent Partner for help completing the building; Nancy Jones, the Call Girl for faithful calling of members; Gary Ash and Earl Wilson, the Galloping Gourmet for their Tony Award Dinner contributions; Rosie Von Engle, the Creative Diligence for set design and artistic talents; Kathy Petree, Miss Congeniality for stage managing and production board liaison; Jessica Clairborne, the WOW for “Cabaret” contributions; Elena Karr, the Unflappable Talent; Dawna Zullo, the Tried and True for behind-the-scenes help; Alexandria Eduart, the Bookend for performances at both ends of the season; Bob Conklin, the Musketeer for building work; Janet MacDonald, the Go Get ’Em for volunteer and donor recruitment; and Darrell Plank, the Magic Fingers for his faithful musical accompaniments.
