The City of Sequim and Sequim-Dungeness Valley Chamber of Commerce have commenced planning the inaugural “Sequim Out of Doors” expo to be held April 12-13, 2014.
According to a pamphlet released by the city, the exposition will feature all of the outdoors and recreation activities near Sequim. The area has a lot to offer outdoors enthusiasts, said City Communications Director Barbara Hanna, with activities ranging from skiing and horseback riding to fly-fishing and archery.
At a March 28 meeting, Hanna discussed the next phases of the planning process, which will include developing marketing and financial infrastructure and creating an event committee.
Twenty people attended the meeting to contribute ideas and get information about the future of the exposition. Crystal Stout, with Morning Star Balloon, suggested incorporating hot air balloons into the program; Emma Nguyen, with Therapeutic Associates, suggested adding rock climbing to the activities list and John D’Urso, a board member of the Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley, suggested bringing Jamestown S’Klallam cultural specialist Gideon Kaufman on board as a presenter.
The list of sponsors and activities has yet to be whittled down and the city plans to go to both small and large corporations for sponsorship. The Dungeness River Audubon Center and Brown’s Outdoor sit right next to Columbia Sportswear and The North Face as possible sponsors.
Those interested in helping should contact Hanna at 681-3433 or Shelli Robb-Kahler, chamber executive director, at 683-6197.
