In the wake of last week’s shooting at Umpqua Community College, Peninsula College Associated Student Council will host a panel discussion focused on hostile intruder prevention and preparation at 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 13, in the College’s Pirate Union Building, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.
Community members are welcome.
The panel will feature Peninsula College Campus Safety Operations Manager Marty Martinez and Mental Health Counselor Sandi MacIntosh, Port Angeles Police Department School Resource Officer Sky Sexton and Port Angeles Fire Department Chief Ken Dubuc.
Associated Student Council President Sydney Roberts and the student leadership team plan to invite students, faculty, staff and community members to sign a banner in support of Umpqua Community College and then participate in a discussion with the panelists about how Peninsula College students and staff might respond to a hostile intruder.
“Our hearts and thoughts go out to the campus and community affected by the Umpqua tragedy,” Roberts says. “The forum will address participant concerns and help prepare our students in case of an emergency. At the beginning of the forum we will have a moment of silence for Umpqua Community College.”
The conversation will also explore potential warning signs from social media, and behavior that has been common in other incidents of school violence.
The College also plans to hold a safety drill for students and staff Thursday, Oct. 15, as part of routine drills exercised at the beginning of each quarter.
