Jerry Jeff Pedersen, 29, and his attorney John Black seek to drop four of five felony charges against him for communicating with a minor for immoral purposes.
Pedersen, a former volunteer assistant coach with the Sequim High School girls varsity basketball team, pleaded guilty to the charges Thursday, Aug. 21.
Sequim Police investigated and stated in court documents that Pedersen and a then-15-year-old-girl on the basketball team allegedly were in a relationship.
Court documents state that Black objected to the pre-sentence investigation on Oct. 9 in Clallam County Superior Court. Prosecuting Attorney Alex Schodowski said that since Pedersen has no previous offenses the state proposes Pedersen plead guilty to the one charge and the court would dismiss the other charges.
Judge George Wood later scheduled a hearing on revising the charges to 9 a.m. Thursday, Oct. 23.
Pedersen could face five felony counts from police-obtained text messages shared March 1-23 leading up to five years in prison and up to a $10,000 fine for each charge.
However, with no prior criminal record, Pedersen may face one to three months in jail, 12 months of community custody and/or up to $10,000 in fines. He must register as a sex offender if convicted.
Pedersen, a volunteer coach since November 2012, allegedly exchanged explicit texts and pictures with the girl, who told police she and Pedersen would text several times a day from waking up to going to bed.
He currently is released to his father’s custody and must not have contact with women under 18 unless supervised by adults aware of the charges.
