It may be April 2009, but 2013 will be here before you know it, so planning is getting under way for Sequim’s 100th birthday celebration.

"I’m looking for volunteers to help, anyone interested or with ideas," said City Clerk Karen Kuznek-Reese, who is organizing the yearlong festivities.

The first planning meeting is set for 1 p.m. Wednesday, June 10, in the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St.

They hope to know what events are being planned in time for the 2010 budget process that begins in July, Kuznek-Reese said.

"Yes, we’ll put some money in the 2010 budget. You’ve got to plan ahead," she said.

The state of Washington celebrated its centennial in 1989, but Sequim’s celebration will be better, Kuznek-Reese said.

"Of course it’s going to be better; it’s Sequim!" she said. "I’m excited. There will be yearlong festivities but also a grand bash of some kind."

According to the Clallam County Historical Society, 79 men petitioned the Clallam County commissioners on July 19, 1913, to incorporate Sequim.

The city limits included 440 acres, one mile north and south and three-quarters of a mile east and west of Sequim Avenue.

The election was held Oct. 24, 1913, and the vote was 90-66. The certificate of incorporation was filed with the Secretary of State on Nov. 20, 1913, and Sequim was declared a fourth-class city.
