The Lady Wolves’ swim team (3-1 overall) swam past the Klahowya Eagles (1-4) on Oct. 6 in Bremerton 98-70 for its third team win of the season.
“We are working toward some state times for the first time since (Mark Pincikowski, assistant coach) and I began coaching,” head coach Anita Benitez said.
Several girls continue to improve on their times and move closer to districts and state-qualifying times.
The 400 free relay of Joie Darminio, Sonja Govertsen, Anna Miehe and Meguire Vander Velde cut 3 seconds from their districts time (4:17) to come closer to the 4:01.00 state-qualifying time.
Govertsen also cut 1 second from her 50 free (26.55) and is 0.35 seconds away from a state-qualifying time. She also swam down her 100 butterfly time to 1:10.19.
Isa Benitez subtracted 5 seconds from her 200 freestyle time to 2:01.14 and qualified for districts while Sydney Swanson made districts, too, in the 200 IM at 2:44.69. At this point, 10 girls have qualified for districts
Other girls cutting event times include Darminio from her portion of the 200 free relay, Carmen Wilwert in the 100 breaststroke and 50 free, Vander Velde in the 200 IM, Amanda Murphy in the 50 free and 100 free, Eva Lofstrom in the 50 free, Madeline Patterson in the 50 free, Jaycee Thompson-Porrazzo in the 500 free, Kaitlyn Davis in the 100 free and Elise Schmierer in the 100 free.
Sequim hosts its next three meets at the YMCA of Sequim against Port Angeles at 3 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13, Port Townsend on Oct. 18 and North Kitsap on Oct. 20.
Boys tennis sweeps
Sequim’s boys tennis (8-5 in the Olympic League and overall) won both its match-ups last week with a 4-3 matches win in Bremerton on Oct. 3 and a 7-0 sweep in Port Angeles on Oct. 7.
Against the Knights, all of Sequim’s varsity singles players, Stephen Prorok, No. 1, Justin Porter, No. 2, and Raymond Lam, No. 3, won, while the No. 1 doubles team of Blake Wiker and Thomas Hughes also won.
Wiker and Hughes defeated Alex Mejia and Kyle Lloyd 4-6, 7-6 (7-0), 6-1.
Results for the Port Angeles match were not available by press time.
This week, the Wolves wrap up their regular season by hosting undefeated North Kitsap (11-0, 12-0) on Monday and Coupeville (5-4, 5-5) on Tuesday, and travel to Olympic (8-3, 9-3) on Thursday, Oct. 13.
