Clallam County Public Utility District warns of possible fraudulent activities targeting its customers.
The PUD has been contacted by at least one customer who has received a telemarketing call from a company calling itself "Gold Rush."
The company supposedly indicates that it received the customer’s contact information from the PUD. The scammers then suggest that because of an excellent credit history and long-term association with the PUD, the customer has won one or more vehicles.
The only requirement is that the customer pays the sales tax on the vehicles. Customers are told they then are free to sell or keep the prize.
"The PUD does not share customer information with any entity, and we certainly have nothing to do with a company called Gold Rush," said Doug Nass, PUD general manager.
Nass cautions everyone to be careful about sharing personal information over the phone or Internet.
"If you have doubts about a situation, and the PUD’s name is connected with it, please give us a call to verify the situation," Nass said.
The PUD has contacted local law enforcement about the scam.
