One corner in the Olympic Medical Center Cancer Center recently became much brighter.
Members of the Sunbonnet Sue Quilt Club dedicated a 48-inch by 96-inch “Flower Power” quilt to the center on May 20.
Eighteen quilters created the large piece in 2013 after one participant, Merrie Jo Schroeder, led efforts for its creation after seeing a similar quilt at an international quilt show in Houston, Texas.
Quilters each made a 16-inch block with a flower in bright colors on a blue-green background. Blocks were then cut into quarters and reassembled and the new blocks were given back to the original artists to embellish. The pieces later were sewn and quilted together to form “Flower Power.”
Originally cancer center officials couldn’t accept the donation because there weren’t funds available to frame the quilt to meet health and fire codes, but quilt club members were told of the framing cost and donated more than $1,300 in one meeting.
“This is an awesome testament of the work you do for the community,” said center director Ken Berkes.
Patient navigator Susan Clements said patients are asking for rooms closer to it and are “really speechless” upon a closer look.
Prior to choosing the cancer center, quilt club member Peggy St. George said they sought to donate there because “many members’ lives have been touched by cancer, either through their own diagnosis or family members or close friends, including some of the quilt artists who contributed to this quilt,” St. George said. “Displaying it at the Cancer Center became the No. 1 priority of the group.”
For the dedication 12 of the 18 participants were present.
Quilters include Carolyn Abbott, Joyce Alford, Kath Beecher, Dana Burback, Mary Ann Clayton, Liisa Fagerlund, Lindy Feigenbutz, Mary Liebsch, Julie Malone, Sherry Nagel, Sue Nylander, Diane Ross, Peggy St. George, Sandy Schlechter, Merrie Joe Schroeder, Kathy Stanley, Stephanie Swensson and Joanne Thoma.
Karen’s Framing Center made the frame for the quilt.
