The Olympic Environmental Council will hold a presentation on the Port Angeles Rayonier Pulp Mill cleanup at 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 11, at the Lost Mountain Surf Company, 261391 U.S. Highway 101, just west of Sunny Farms Country Store in Carlsborg. Light refreshments will be served.
The environmental organization initiated the investigation of the mill’s hazardous waste cleanup.
The mill closed in 1997 and shortly afterward investigations found contamination on the mill site, in the adjoining Strait of Juan de Fuca sediments and other Port Angeles soils that caused it to be ranked on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s polluted site list.
The Washington Department of Ecology is coordinating the cleanup.
The council’s presentation will underscore Ecology’s recent sampling of nearby soils, the details of which will be released by the state this spring.
Reservations, which are required, can be made by contacting Darlene Shanfald at 681-7565 or darlenes@olympus.net.
