Red, Set, Go! Event funds defibrillators

The Olympic Medical Center Foundation is launching a communitywide Automatic External Defibrillator Program.

The devices can be used on people in reversible cardiac arrest, where a patient is pulse-less and nonbreathing and in a "shockable" cardiac rhythm. Early application of an AED followed by professional medical assistance often can lead to a positive outcome.

The program is possible due the success of the foundation’s second annual Red, Set Go! Heart Luncheon in February. The funds raised benefit patients in the Cardiac Services Department at Olympic Medical Center and also will be used to provide automated external defibrillators in strategic locations in Sequim and Port Angeles.

Nonprofit organizations serving the public are encouraged to consider having an AED placed on their premises. The foundation has committed to funding up to 50 percent of the cost of each device placed.

Grant guidelines and applications are available by calling 417-7144. The application deadline is July 31.
