Proposition No. 1, a measure that would create a Metropolitan Park District within Sequim Aquatic Recreation Center boundaries, is failing after the initial count of ballots in the Aug. 4 primary by a 60-40 margin.
The proposition received 3,198 yes votes for about 40.2 percent of the 7,943 ballots cast; 59.7 percent voted against the proposal.
“It’s a terrible day for eastern Clallam County: SARC will close,” SARC board president Frank Pickering said. “We don’t know how long. It will depend on our revenue. The board will meet soon and will be discussing the moves we have to make. I have not yet begun the fight.”
Proposition 1 would have had the authority to levy a general annual property tax of up to 75 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation; however, recommended to be 12 cents per $1,000 of assessed valuation; and be governed by a five-member board of at large commissioners.
Scott Deschenes, executive director, joined Pickering at the Clallam County Courthouse Tuesday night to receive the numbers.
“I feel like I failed the staff and the part of the community that really wants SARC to survive,” Deschenes said. “We have a little money left. We’ll do the best we can to keep SARC going as long as possible.”
In the race for Clallam County Commissioner Position 1 (eastern Clallam), Republican Jim McEntire and Democrat Mark Ozias look to move on to the general election. McEntire received 49.3 percent of the vote while Ozias picked up 37.7 percent of 6,543 ballots cast. Bryan Frazier received 12.8 percent.
“I’m thankful to be moving on and excited to campaign for the next several months,” Ozias said Tuesday night. “The numbers looked about as we expected. There’s a lot of work to do between now and Nov. 3 and I’m looking forward to turning my attention to the county outside District 1.”
McEntire was unavailable for comment Tuesday night.
In the race for Sequim School District Director At-Large Position No. 5, first-time board candidate Heather Short received 56.7 percent of 6,129 ballots cast to move on to the general election. She’ll either face Will Payne (24.8 percent) or Charles Meyer (18.4 percent) in the general election.
“I’m overwhelmed — I’ve never done anything like this before,” Short said. “To have the majority of support is humbling. Whether I’m on the board or not, the next thing is the (school) bond; that’s my goal.”
On Monday night the Sequim School Board voted to run a $49.3 million bond on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.
In the other Sequim School District director race, incumbent Heather Jeffers leads the District No. 1 race with 35.9 percent of 4,991 ballots cast, and Robin Henrikson is second with 35.1 percent. Willard Naslund and Rebecca Bratsman, both of whom declared they have dropped out of the race but whose names appeared on the ballot anyway, received 16 and 12.9 percent of the ballots cast, respectively.
In the race for Fire District 3 Commissioner No. 1, incumbent G. Michael Gawley received 44.1 percent of 6,271 ballots cast, with Sean Ryan getting 40.7 percent. Both look to move on to the general election. Coming in third was Alan W. Slind with 15.1 percent.
Tuesday’s total ballot count was 11,457 out of 43,522 registered voters, or 26.3 percent voter turnout. The county elections office estimates there are 3,000 more ballots left to count. The next count is 4:30 p.m. on Aug. 7. The election is certified Aug. 18.
