The Sequim School District Board of Directors opted not to roll over or extend Sequim Schools’ superintendent Gary Neal’s contract by an additional year at its last superintendent evaluation.
In an executive session on June 26, board directors met at the district board room to finish and discuss Neal’s evaluation.
Neal has a three-year contract that employs him in the district through June 30, 2020, but board directors are required to evaluate the superintendent’s performance and working relationship with the board twice each year.
The board met in January for its first discussion of the superintendent’s evaluation.
“We are maintaining superintendent Neal’s current contract through 2020,” Board president Heather Short said.
“As far as his contract, we haven’t changed anything,” Short said.
Short said she wouldn’t comment further on the superintendent’s evaluation due to confidentiality protocol for a district personnel.
Neal was not available for comment by press time.
Board directors could have rolled over or extended Neal’s contract to 2021 in January when they discussed the superintendent’s evaluation process, but also could wait and extend his contract by June 30, which marks the end of each contract year.
In January, Short said the board was in the process of changing how it evaluates the district superintendent to create a more formative assessment.
Short said Neal was presented with his evaluation review before June 30.
