College offers GED test
preparation in Sequim
Students needing assistance in preparing for the General Educational Development test can find it four mornings a week at Sequim Community School, 220 W. Alder St.
Monday through Thursday, Peninsula College instructor Norma Herbold provides free small- and large-group instruction in reading, writing, mathematics and basic computer skills. The open-entry class meets from 8-11:30 a.m. throughout the spring quarter.

Spring Gariepy Grant
applications now being accepted
Requests for Gariepy Grants are being offered to graduates of Clallam County high schools seeking careers in education.
Students – both male and female are eligible – must have completed their first two years of study in an accredited college or university and been accepted into a program leading to a career in education.
The grants also are available to students who have completed their first two years at Peninsula College and been accepted into an accredited college or university leading to a career in education.
Application forms are available from scholarship chairman Carol Verstegen, 134 Sunset Place in Sequim, or by calling 683-4821. Deadline for applications is June 1.
The grants are awarded by the Beta Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma International in memory of Helen Gariepy, a longtime Port Angeles educator and member of the Beta Nu Chapter who left a bequest to the chapter for such scholarships.
Anderson earns spot
on PLU fall dean’s list
Matthew O. Anderson of Sequim was named to Pacific Lutheran University’s dean’s list for fall quarter of 2007.
Anderson, a 2007 graduate of Sequim High School, has not declared a major. He is the son of Jack and Karin Anderson of Sequim. The school’s dean’s list requires a grade-point-average of at least 3.50 for the term.
Band boosters host
garage sale fundraiser
The Sequim High Band Boosters are sponsoring a garage sale from 8 a.m.-1 p.m., April 19 in the high school cafeteria, 601 N. Sequim Ave.
The booster group is continuing fund-raising efforts for expenses for the spring parades and trips.

Head Start recruiting
local children, families
Sequim Head Start programs are recruiting eligible children and families for the 2008-2009 school year.
Head Start is a federally funded program serving families with children ages up to 5.
Three programs are available: a part-day, part-year preschool; a full-day, full-year preschool; and Early Head Start, a year-round program for pregnant women and/or children ages 0-3.
Full-day, full-year Head Start and Early Head Start program options are available in Port Angeles, Sequim, Port Townsend, Port Hadlock, Chimacum, Quilcene and Forks.

Middle School hosts ‘E-cycle’ event for Earth Day
Sequim Middle School’s Parent-Teacher-Student Association is accepting old, used electronic devices – including computers, printers, televisions, cell phones and more – to be recycled as part of an Earth Day fundraiser project on April 19.
The event is at the middle school parking lot, 301 W. Hendrickson Road, from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Electronic devices will be recycled for a fee; costs vary according to the size and type of electronics donated.
A portion of the proceeds benefit the Olympic Parks Institute.
Items recycled are tax deductible as charity.
