Parenting Matters hosts dinner, auction
The Parenting Matters Foundation hosts a fundraising dinner and silent auction at 5:30 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St. The event raises funds for the First Teacher program.
Cost is $45 per person, with reservations needed by Aug. 14. The guest speaker is Dr. Bette Hyde, director of the Washington State Department of Early Learning.
The Sequim Marimba band is slated to provide music.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with dinner starting at 6:30 p.m.

Scholarship applications available
Soroptimist International of Sequim is accepting applications for three continuing education scholarships.
Applicants must be female graduates of Sequim High School or have a legal address within the Sequim School District. They also need to have completed one year of college or equivalent and plan to be enrolled in school for the fall of 2009.
Applications for these $1,000 scholarships may be picked up at Sequim Village Glass, 761 Carlsborg Road, Computer Solutions, 162 E. Bell St., or Henery’s Garden Center, 1060 Sequim-Dungeness Way.
Applications must be returned by Aug. 28. Recipients are notified by Sept. 5.

Flag team workshops set
The Sequim High School flag team hosts workshops this summer in the Sequim Community School gymnasium, 220 W. Alder St.
The flag team performs with the Sequim High marching band throughout the school year. Anyone who will be a student at the high school this fall is invited to come learn color guard skills, incorporating music, flag work and dance elements.

Free summer camp on Lake Crescent
Clallam County Juvenile and Family Services hosts its annual free "Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp" from Aug. 23-28 for youths who cannot afford to attend other summer camps.
Camp activities include hiking, swimming, dancing, crafts, game competitions, tie-dying, ropes course challenges and communication skills building.
The event is at Camp David Junior at Lake Crescent.

River center offers summer science camp
The Dungeness Audubon River Center (2151 W. Hendrickson Road) hosts a summer science camp for boys and girls of ages 8-11 from Aug. 17-19.
Youths survey Railroad Bridge Park and investigate the Dungeness River’s wide variety of plants, animals and insects. They also learn about floodplains, ecology, geology, river dynamics and the railroad bridge.
The goal, camp organizers say, is help youths understand and enjoy the natural world through a variety of hands-on activities.
