Trails group hosts work party
The Peninsula Trails Coalition members host their second Saturday work party from 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m. on July 11, doing grass- and weed-control on a section of the Olympic Discovery Trail east of Sequim.
Participants meet at the kiosk at Whitefeather Way and are asked to bring brooms, loppers, square-tipped shovels, grass blowers and water. Lunch is provided for those who RSVP by noon July 9.

Babe Ruth squad takes third seed, hosts car wash
Sequim’s 15U baseball squad is headed to the state tournament with the No. 3 seed after losing a pair of close contests and going 0-3 at their district tourney in Poulsbo June 27-28.
The Sequim all-stars opened with a 3-0 loss to host North Kitsap and fell to Olympic Junior Babe Ruth 13-4 later on Saturday. On Sunday, Sequim dropped a 9-8 decision in nine innings to North Kitsap.
North Kitsap came back to beat Olympic Junior Babe Ruth for the top seed.
All three teams play at the state tourney, scheduled to start July 16 in Ellensburg.
The team hosts a car wash from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. July 4 in the parking lot at The Sauer Kraut, 10181 Old Olympic Highway, to pay for its trip to the state tournament.
NFL Flag opens registration for fall league
The Sequim NFL Flag fall league is open to boys and girls of ages 6-12.
The co-ed league with multiple age divisions runs from Sept. 3-Nov. 2 with games at the Sequim High School playfields, 601 N. Sequim Ave., during afternoons. Register and pay online at: www.sequimnfl-flag.com.
Cost is $35 for Boys & Girls Club members; nonmembers pay an $8 seasonal membership fee. Required equipment includes a mouth guard and cleats.
The league also is seeking volunteers to coach teams, referee games, help with field/equipment, be team parents, etc.

Cedars hosts
field day
The Cedars at Dungeness’ men’s club hosts a field day beginning at 9:30 a.m. on July 8 at the golf course at 1965 Woodcock Road.
Sign-in is 8-9:15 a.m.
The game is four-man teams, two best balls net. Teams are computer-selected to equalize handicaps.
Nine finalists are selected for the nine-hole championship. An estimated $1,300 in prize money is up for grabs.
The event includes a putting contest and chipping contest.
Entry fee is $30 for Cedars members ($15 without dinner), or $52 for nonmembers ($37 without dinner).
Entry deadline is July 6.
Sequim doubles
tennis tourney set
Peninsula Tennis Club is sponsoring the Sequim Doubles Tennis Tournament at the Sequim High School tennis courts on July 10-12.
Events include mens, womens and mixed doubles divisions at the combined skill levels of 6.0 to 9.0.

Gymnastics group opens summer

BMXers host vendors, ‘life’ race
The Port Angeles BMX track hosts a vendor day and Race For Life starting at 11 a.m. on July 18 at the Port Angeles track near the Clallam County Fairgrounds.
Event participants are encouraged to sell their used BMX bikes.
An A-Pro BMX clinic with Daniel Mazuti is scheduled for 11 a.m.-1 p.m.; cost is $25.
Sign-up for the Race For Life is scheduled for 3-4 p.m. Cost is a $10 donation and $10 race fee. The race is open to all riders.
A Strongman exhibition is slated for 1-3 p.m.

Horse camp
comes to P.T.
The Jefferson County 4-H Horse Project hosts its annual Horse Camp from July 9-12 at the Jefferson County Fairgrounds in Port Townsend.
This is an open camp for youths and adults over the age of 8. The camp features a variety of classes, including fitting and showing, English and Western, dressage, jumping, trail, gaming and much more for beginners to advanced riders.
Haul-in is 6 p.m. on July 8 for a mandatory orientation and schedule.
The camp is limited to 40 people on a first-come, first-served basis for paid registration.
Cost for four days of professional lessons is $125 per person and $100 per person for families with two or more youths attending. For more information, call Michelle at 643-1500.
PC soccer camp set
The Peninsula College soccer fields at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd. are the site of a soccer camp for youths 8-14 years of age from Aug. 3-7.
A camp set for Aug. 3-7 is also for youths 8-14 years of age. The camp meets 9 a.m.-3 p.m. each day. Cost is $99. Registration closes July 31. Sign up at www.portangelessoccer.com.
Girls teen soccer camp set for August
A soccer camp for girls ages 13-19 is scheduled for 9 a.m.-5 p.m. on Aug. 8 and 11 a.m.-5 p.m. on Aug. 9 at the Peninsula College soccer fields, 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.
The camp focuses on conditioning, technical development and tactical decision-making skills. Participants are urged to bring cleats, shin guards, paper, pencil and lunch. Some time is spent in a classroom and the camp features a one-hour lunch break each day.
Cost is $85 per player. Andrew Chapman, Peninsula College’s men’s soccer head coach, organizes the camp.

NPBA golf tourney turns 10
The North Peninsula Building Association’s 10th-annual golf tournament is scheduled for a 9 a.m. start on Friday, Aug. 21.
The event is at Peninsula Golf Club, 824 S. Lindberg Road in Port Angeles.
Tourney format is a four-person scramble for men and women.
Cost is $90; fee includes cart (two people per), lunch, prizes and one drink ticket. Lunch only is $15 per person.
Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
Tournament directors are seeking sponsors, with support levels starting at $200.

Boater cards promote safety
With the opening of boating season right around the corner, the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission reminds boaters about the boater education card requirement.
Washington boaters are required by a law passed in 2005 to take and pass a boater education course and have their education card with them when operating a vessel of 15 horsepower or more in Washington waterways. Boaters of ages 12-25 years are now required to carry the card when operating a boat. The card requirement for other age groups will be phased in through 2014. Boaters born before Jan. 1, 1955, are exempt from this law.
To meet the new education requirements, boaters can take approved courses in a classroom, online or at home. Once the course is passed, boaters pay $10 for the card, which is good for life.
