Schools to review superintendent in special meeting

The Sequim School District Board of Directors have scheduled a special meeting for 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 26, to evaluate interim superintendent Gary Neal.

The meeting is slated to take about two hours and will be conducted in executive session, district representatives said this week.

The meeting agenda includes input from both stakeholders and Neal himself, though no action is planned.

Neal has been the interim superintendent since May. He worked as assistant superintendent under Kelly Shea and then applied for the superintendent position earlier this year, when Shea announced he was leaving for the West Valley-Spokane superintendent position.

A weeks-long process of accepting applications, culling a semifinal short list and selection of three finalists — one of which dropped out two days before a final interview — ensued. School board directors finally elected not to make an offer to either remaining candidates, instead selecting Neal to lead the district on an interim basis.

The board’s next regular board meeting is scheduled for Nov. 2. Board members would need to vote in open session to either offer Neal a contract as superintendent (minus the “interim” status”) or to restart the superintendent hiring process, district officials said this week.
