One of Sequim’s two elementary schools is expanding — sort of — for the 2015-2016 school year.
The Sequim School District is adding two portables to Helen Haller Elementary School. Both are to be delivered in June and will be installed on the school’s east side, officials said in mid-February.
The district considered putting the portables on the school’s west end between Helen Haller and the Sequim Boys & Girls Club, but opted for the east side when factoring in utility hookup fees.
“Putting them in a parking lot between the Boys & Girls Club and the school is the best option,” Sequim schools superintendent Kelly Shea said, but noted that costs of hooking up to city sewer and water nearly double.
That puts the number of portable classrooms in the district to 25, with 13 classrooms in seven portables at Helen Haller, eight classrooms in four buildings at Sequim High School and four classrooms in two portables at Greywolf Elementary School.
“Our only option at this point is to buy more portables,” Shea said.
